“IGNORE THE OTHER IDIOT REVIEWS”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2010

This was my tenth overseas holiday this year........I travel a lot , generally on All Inclusives in 3 star plus or 4 star hotels , so I know what I am talking about !

Firstly , this is an excellent hotel in every single way .

I cannot believe the rubbish I have read in the few bad reviews on this hotel........I can only suggest to those clients that they should forget about overseas holidays and stick to holidays in the U.K. where they will be able to find the entertainment and the food ( with real chips ) which they sorely missed.

For simplicity , I shall itemise under separate headings the main items ay this hotel :

> Language ........all the staff speak extremely good English ; many also speak German , Russian and Italian ; obviously ,they all speak fluent French .

> Reception..........24 hours with extremely obliging and helpful fluent English speaking staff.

> Rooms...........all are large ( twice the size of a luxury room at the London Waldorf Hotel ! ) ; our room had a well furnished balcony overlooking the Palm gardens and the sea beyond ; our room was well furnished and all the bedding and fittings were neat and very homely ; we had fresh towels provided every day in our large en suite bathroom .

> Hotel buildings .....these are all of a modern and well maintained appearance ; the hotel is built on a crescent , with the gardens in the centre , leading to the main pool area; a lockable gate leads to the private beach area .

> Beach ............I am always amazed at the lack of information in Tour brochures and in Reviews about a hotel beach ...........surely this should be one of the foremost items ? Well , the beach is reached from the pool area along a short Oleander shrub lined path ; the beach is very long , maybe 2 or 3 miles and is beautiful silky sand . Each hotel has its own private area on the beach ; as this hotel is very wide , so the private beach area correspondingly is very wide .Lines of straw beach umbrellas give shade for hotel guests and loungers with cushions are provided for every umbrella ; umbrellas and loungers are free to hotel guests but you must go down early each morning , if you want to reserve a front line umbrella . Although , this hotel does not permit prebooking of loungers , many of the guests make an advance payment to the hotel beach chair attendant ,to reserve umbrellas. He normally does this at 5.30 am so if you are quick, you have a good choice. This may seem early but many people are swimming by 6 am.

> Beach Bar ........a good bar is on the beach for soft drinks, beer and wine ; there is also a very good Pizza and fresh seafood bar/ restaurant at ordinary prices..........however , most guests are on All Inclusive and the same food is available from the restaurants , only a short walk back to the hotel.

> The Sea ...........well, it`s very wet ! The sea is warm and crystal clear ..........no pebbles or rocks ; the sea shelves very gently and there are minimum waves , no under currents and floating buoys form a line along the shore at about 8 feet depth to warn swimmers to stay nearer the beach.

> The weather.........the sun is overhead from 8am until 5 pm and is at its hottest between 12 and 2 ; beach games are very popular from bif baf bats to volleyball.

> Beach Animation........the hotel Animation team organises daily Aerobics and Water aerobics.........THIS WILL GET YOU FIT .

> Beach Towels......the hotel does not permit room towels to be taken outside and Pool or Beach towels are not provided. You should take your own or , quite simply , buy a really nice towel for 5 pounds ( sterling ) at the hotel pool bazaar shop .

> Pool area.........this is a very large area , again with umbrellas and loungers ; the pool water is always warm , immaculately clear and clean ; the Animation team organise non stop games and entertainment both around the pool and in the pool

> Children ..........what can I say ...........this hotel has fantastic childrens carers and all day entertainers .......games , drawing , collecting , dancing , singing..........you name it.

> Dress patterns ..........all guests generally wear swimming costumes all the time ; however the Russians were always displeased at the middle aged English women who pranced around topless ..........fortunately, most of the English women honoured the customs and culture of the Tunisian people..........on a point about the badly behaved Russians , as reviewed in a few of the bad reviews , I found them the most charming , courteous , quiet , well mannered and well behaved of all the nationalities at the hotel and on the beaches

> Pool Bazaar / Supermarket.........this is quite a large store , well laid out and stocks absolutely everything .........cosmetics, toiletries, shampoos, beach towels, beach games , inflatables from crocodiles to arm bands ,CD s, cassettes , chocolates , crisps and a huge range of hand made souvenirs and jewellery.

> Gardens..........these are well laid out and are mainly large lawn areas with tall overhead swaying palms

> Food........... this is a problem area ..........there is just too much of it and it is just too varied , and so delicious , that you finish one dish and decide to try a little of another and another and so on ! There is one main enormous restaurant in the main hotel , overlooking the gardens and a smaller restaurant , near the pool . The latter serves hot snack food all day , as well as free ice creams all day , teas and coffees ( and alcoholic drinks ). The food is buffet style and includes salads , cold meats , cheeses , fruits , desserts , breads , cakes ,pastries, various hot meat and fish dishes , vegetable dishes , egg dishes ,soups and so on. we really pigged out the first 2 days but soon slowed down for the rest of the holiday ..........all the dishes are very tasty , beautifully cooked but you really must pace yourself .

> Bars ........these are everywhere and all daytime drinks , around the pool and on the beach are served in plastic cups ( the same as in most resort hotels ..........much safer ! );in the evenings ,drinks from the hotel bars or terrace bars are served in appropriate glasses.

> Night entertainments.........each evening the Animation team organise a good series of holidays games and dances ; there is a disco near the pool but we were so tired that we generally just crashed out around 10 pm.

> Excursions.........there are plenty offered but as we went for a beach holiday , we did not bother , other than to go for 2 hours, before dinner one evening , by local taxi ,into the old Medina area of Sousse ; it was fascinating and we fully expected to see Indiana Jones being chased through the narrow lanes . Everything is on sale in these lanes and we bought various spices , some nougat , a mosaic tile depicting the hand of Fatma and a few bags of almonds .

> Tipping.....most countries I visit , it is customary to give a tip at every twist and turn ; at this hotel , however , the staff neither hinted nor asked at any point for tips. Naturally we tipped our chambermaid both at the beginning and at the end and just gave odd tips here and there ; this is tricky to do as most guests are on All Inclusive and believe you me , it is very hard to spend any money at this hotel.........everything is provided ..........even bottles of water .....as many as you want.

So , dear reader , I hope this narrative is useful; I really mean it when I say this is an excellent value for money , holiday hotel.

This was our 6th visit to the tour khalef in tunisia and we always come home wanting to return!
The rooms are cleaned daily with fresh towels. And you will always see something being cleaned where ever you go in the hotel! The carpets had all been replaced in the building where our rooms were and all kept in good order, some wonderful people had decided to decorate a corridor which was freshly painted within 2 days.
We were impressed at the new all inclusive bar on the patio with the wonderful Gazi and the modern funiture. It was also nice that the stage and entertainment had been moved down near the pool evenings so you can enjoy a drink and relax in the warm evening! This was our 1st all inc at this hotel as have always found it cheap enough to stay half board but as the hotel is changing to all inc and we have been so many times we had a free upgrade and would definately pay to be all inc again!
We never found the restaurant a nightmare as some reviews say, we went to dinner between 8-8.30 each night (where we were looked after by dear Grammie who has looked after us since my sons who are now 14 and 11 were 5 and 8 and he still remembers their names!) Never had any big queues or russians shoving (although it is quite funny to see there tables decorated with so much fruit they are so wasteful!)
There were always sunbeds whatever time of day you venture to the pool or to the beach and we stayed the 1st 2 weeks in august. There are water slides in the sister hotel marhaba next door which the boys used loads of times too!
It was nice to see soo many brits here this year as we usually are reallly outnumbered by the russians!
Had a great time and will definately be returning in the future hopefully before our dear Grammie retires!

I have been going to tunisia for 8 years now and stayed in a few hotels and let me tell you this is by far the best.... its lovely dont understand why anyone wouldnt like it. The staff are nice and friendly, the food is good and they also have a little resturant at the side of the pool so you can sit out doors or in if you fancy something diff eg pizza, pool area is really big and have entertainment for the kids they will have alot of fun, And you walk stright on to the beach no long walks.. check the videos out on this hotel you will see how nice it is, i could go on and on for ages but i wont just take my word and ingnore them bad reveiws what a load of rubbish.

The Hotel is right beside an out side Disco, Great Hotel if you don’t go to bed till 6am, We went all inclusive, Your got the same food for Lunch and Dinner for the 2 weeks, After a week we had to start eating out as we could not take anymore of it. 12-year-old son has to have a gluten free diet, only one member of staff understood this and we spent the all the time looking for him although one morning he did suggest that my son could have cornflakes? Evening meals was terrible it was like a race to get food, food was just terrible. Kids not allowed to play at the pool with balls; Russians took over the pool and hid the kid’s balls. Russians has several fights at the pool mostly with each other, over each other looking at each other’s women. Will never be back to this hotel.

On arrival you can't fail to be impressed by the hotel entrance, reception and grounds as you look from the terrace area. Unfrotunately the good stuff stops there..........

First a few positives;
Weather - absolutely amazing
Thomson Kids Club - the girls who ran this were fantastic and without them the holiday would have been a total disaster for our 3 children. They do a great job under the circumstances.
Room - very well cleaned although we did have to ask for sheets to be changed as they just seemed to be making the beds with the same ones all the time

Now the bad stuff;

Ice Cream/Drinks

Our children were very excited at the prospect of having free reign to ice cream ,snacks and drinks for 2 weeks. What they got was access to an ice cream freezer at very limited times which was too high for most young children to reach into. There are no snacks available during the day only the lunch buffet which in the pool area is under a constant attack from both flies and heavily sweating bar staff. Drinks are lovingly served to you in plastic cups (ok no problem during the day by the pool) from warm and left open bottles. Asking them for a drink which they don't have already open is the only way you will get a semi cold drink. The bottles are left open until they are emptied so they are not only warm but flat too. And finally dont expect any still water. This is not available on all inclusive packages so you have to buy it!!! This was one of the worst aspects as none of us (or many of the people we spoke to) drink fizzy water. As I mentioned already the pool bar area is so hot (no aircon) that even the local waiters/bar staff are dripping with sweat which is highly appetising as they serve you.
In the evening you still get plastic cups and don't ask for complex drinks like lager and lime, white wine and soda or vodka lime and soda. These exotic cocktails just don't compute with these guys..........
And the best part is you can expect to wait behind 5-15 people depending on the time of day to get a drink. There will be plenty of staff but they operate a system where 1 asks what you want and scans your wristband, 1 pours the warm flat drinks and 3-4 others just flounce around in the background. For paying guests (non all inclusive) you will see the bar staff pounce on them as they think they will get more tips. The only decent bar service is in the lobby bar which seems quiet most of the time
The staff on the whole are rude and arrogant and the younger ones are creepy as they try to flirt with all the women

Food
The food is poor to say the least. You are allocated a dining time in the evening so you can't just decide to go when you are hungry. At breakfast you are lucky to find a clean table if you go after 8:30 and getting someone to clear one is a nightmare. We complained to the Thompson rep about the food and he (Feti) told us they knew there was a problem and they were talking to the hotel owner to try and get him to spend more to improve the food quality. Now I think Thomson should insist on a certain level of quality and not try and negotiate it. The food is poor quality with very very limited choice. Anything half decent gets snapped up by the plateload by the Russian guests who seem to think they are stockpiling for the next cold war.....
after 8-9 days we just stopped eating lunch or dinner because everything had been seen at least 5 times in different formats. Last nights meat in batter or breadcrumbs..you get the picture
In the restaurant (hardly worthy of that name) you have to collect your own drinks from the bar. There is a guy who stands there fillng the same plastic bottles from the draught taps all day and he expects a tip! A tip for me walking across the room to pour my own warm drinks...He actually approached me about this in the final days and I made it clear to him he had no chance. tips are for good service not for self service!

Maintenance

This is the big issue here. Go and have a game of mini golf in the lovely garden area where you will be surrounded by litter and abandoned furniture. Show a member of the bar staff a chair with nails sticking out of it and wonder as he just moves it to the next table. My daughter badly cut her toe in the pool and I found that the pool filter covers were all cracked and very sharp. I pointed this out to the reception staff and they didn' care. I then told the Thomson kids club staff who got it attended to straight away (not their job but they were interested). When I say sorted the maintenance man sent the pool security guard to the pool and he unscrewed and removed the covers. They didn't have spares so they left uncovered filters (not dangerous) with lovely gaps around them which were edged with very sharp tiles. I wasted my breath explaning this was as bad but they really didn't give a toss about guest safety. After 4 days they replaced the covers. One nice feature of the pool is the floating electric light which bobs gently in the pool all day because it has come loose and nobody bothers to fix it.
The pool was never cleaned in the 2 weeks we were there. The pool area is filthy and the sunbeds are thick with dirt where drinks have been spilt on them and the dust/sand has stuck. If you go early in the morning you will see all the rubbish from the previous day still all over the place. The most unhygenic pool area I have ever seen.
The park area is also completely run down. the trampoline springs are worn out and the surround is all broken. Very dirty and mostly broken

Entertainment

Our kids usually love the Thomson entertainment on these trips. Bad luck there isn't any. The local entertainers are the smarmiest annoying bunch of gimps I have ever come across. You don't want to buy a crappy t-shirt with your name on it - then you are a loser! Watch out for fat tattoo man. He just sits about all day trying to get you to have a tattoo done. Please don't miss the show the entertainers write and put on themselves because it is EPIC. You will think Ricky Gervais wrote it in the style of the office because it is so cringeworthy. The fire eating show is quite good but you might be collared by the performer to get him some free drinks from the bar. I didn't mind but it isn't what you expect from a performer!

Some quotes from the Thomson rep
"we are trying to speak to the owner to increase the budget for food and improve the quality"
"we seem to have these problems every year when it is busy, in the winter is it fine" (in relation to the queues at the bar
"to be honest I would rather not be here myself" towards the end of our moaning session after about 5 other guests had done the same
"can we have a cleaner please" kids club rep to reception because the room they use hadn't been cleaned for days

Summary
Thomson should be ashamed they use this place - it is abysmal. I can only guess that someone linked to the hotel or Thomson is writing the positive reviews on here

Hi, i've just returned from a 2 week break at this hotel and, after reading other reviews, I felt inclined to leave my comments on this resort.

Firstly, I think you do need to remember that you are in a relatively poor country - the reception in the hotel is very grand, but the rooms are relatively basic, although very well equipped (apart from a hair dryer, so ladies take your own as you cant rent them!!). We always had hot water in the bath, and the shower was powerful which can be unusual for other countries.

The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly - even the one's that were not working for a tip.

I found the food to be fantastic, despite other complaints noted on here (I suspect they are McDonald's eaters!!) - always a decent selection of meat, fish, vegetables, salad, soups and pasta etc, plus a great selection of deserts and fruit.

The drinks are plentiful, even if sometimes served in very small glasses. We didnt fund any problems with queuing for drinks, again despite reports read on here.

The location was perfect - a 1min stroll to the beach, and about a 15min walk in to the local town if you wanted a change of scenery. All the water sports are extrenely well run, as are the activities in and around the pool. One thing I would say is that, if you are expecting a very quiet stay, this may not be for you. It's fairly noisy with music and activites etc around the pool, but this is, after all, a family resort so it's all there to ensure that they are well entertained. The flumes in the Maharba (a 2min stroll away) are free to use for guests and well worth a visit with the little ones.

Evening entertainment was basic at times with stuff like a kids disco, bingo and some dance shows, but very entertaining and the kids absolutely loved it.

Obviously the main problem here is the Russian's, but if you can learn to ignore them then it will be fine. Yes, they dont have any manners and tend to push in, but stand your ground and they will clear off. What I would recommend is an early siiting for dinner in the main restaurant (between 6.30 and 7.30pm) as the Russian's tend to eat later on, or alternatively eat down at the poolside snack-bar in the evening - they serve the exact same food, but this is for the English only and is much quieter.

All in all a fantastic break and, for the first time in a while, i'm actually gutted to be back home.

Stayed for 1 week half board at end of July 2010. Big lobby/reception area. Was busy when we checked in and took a while, but after reminding staff we were still waiting for room they sorted it out quickly. Most people had their bags taken to rooms for them or they were directed, we were told to find our own way with a point in the direction we needed to go. This was no problem for us as everything was clearly signposted and we saved ourselves a couple of dinar in tips!!!
Room was big, with large bathroom also. Had a good view from balcony, but it did not get any sun. Had TV in room with a couple of English channels. Bathroom was fine, shower hot and powerful, although you did have to hold the shower head yourself. Rooms were cleaned daily, with towels changed whenever you needed. We left a dinar tip each morning on the pillow and the maids arranged the bedding and clothing into interesting shapes on the bed. We liked to look forward to seeing what they created each day. They also tidied the room and liked to put all of the shoes in a neat line and rearrange the toiletries on the desk. Some other people mentioned the open air disco that went on till all hours. It is called Bora Sousse and we were on the side of the hotel nearest to it. It started about 11pm ish and went on till about after 4am. While we heard it, it did not spoil our sleep or our experience.
The food in the restaurant was good. Lots of choice and it was replenished with fresh dishes even before the old ones had been totally finished. Big salad bar, an italian section with pasta dishes and pizza, 2 grilling areas which served freshly grilled fish, chicken, burgers - usually something different each night, then there were loads of self service style areas to choose hot food from with a decent choice. I liked to try the different foods, the stews were good and surprisingly so was the brick egg! Lots of deserts, fruit and ice cream too. Water melon was very popular and there is a guy chopping it up all night. A lot of the other reviews commented on the Russians for their basic lack of manners and inability to queue in turn and wait for their food. There were a lot of Russians. They did serve some food just to cater for the Russians. They liked to pile their plates up with mountains of food and then left most of it. However I only witnessed actual pushing in by the Russians once and so did my boyfriend. Most of the time we found it amusing just to watch their antics during meal times, it did not bother us. Breakfast was also good, loads of choice; hot cooked food including, eggs, tomatoes etc, cereals, pastries, yoghurt, cheese, toast, fruit juices and tea/coffee/chocolate. As we went half board, we didn't sample what was on offer at lunch, but we did eat at the pool snack bar for about 3 days. There is a reasonable choice at decent prices (from 4 to 7 dinar) we tended just to have the salads or sandwiches which were good.
The Pool and beach area were nice and clean. We didn't actually use the beach, but went on it for walks. Sand is amazing and the sea is clear. Around the pool area in the day the animation team work really hard at entertaining children and adults. Their entertainment is basic, but is entertaining and amusing to watch. We saw aqua aerobics, darts and water polo. You are able to use the facilities of the other mahaba hotels when you stay at the tour khalef, we ended up using the gym for 5 dinar each. There is a spa in the next hotel which looked reasonably priced.
We walked along the beach into sousse to check out the walled medina one day. The walk took about half an hour. We did not get hassled that much about buying things from the shops in there, but if we did just a "No thanks" was enough. We also went to the museum, very interesting.
We took the 2 day simply sahara trip through the thomsons rep. This cost 189 D each, about £85 each. This was well worth the money paid and I would recommend it, although it was a lot of traveling on the coach. The camel ride, the 4x4 trek through the sand dunes of the sahara and the visits to the star wars sets were the highlights.
Evening entertainment in the hotel was fun. They kicked off with the kids club that went on till about 9 - 9.30. The songs were catchy and all had dances to them, even some of the adults joined in. There were usually different things on each night, bingo, karaoke, staff shows etc. The staff dancing was great and they always try to get the crowd involved. They worked hard at making sure people were enjoying themselves.
All in all I found the people to be friendly, the staff were really good and made sure you were happy. It always helped to leave a tip at each meal and at the bar of 1 D (about 50p) and this made sure you were looked after during your stay.
