“Better Than Expected!”
Reviewed January 28, 2009

This review is late but still worth writing! I was worried about this hotel as some of the reports I had read were not good but we had an enjoyable holiday overall.

HOTEL: Reception area, lounge area very good. Our bedroom and bathroom both spacious with good storage but both in need of makeover. However, we were told that one wing of the hotel was being renovated and was almost complete. I guess they were doing each wing in turn. The hotel was one of the first to be built in this part of Sousse and is 36 years old. We had a sea view from our balcony but due to time of visit did not get any sun.

The dining room was o.k. as was the food. It was much as we expected for the all inclusive price we paid and nothing to complain about. The all inclusive bit with regard to alcohol in the bar was a bit of let down - no G & T's but fortunately we both drink wine and there was plenty of it!

The gardens, pool area and beach were all very, very good.

What made the holiday for us were the hotel staff, without exception all excellent, friendly and helpful. The animation team have a rough time of it out of season as it is very hard to get some people going but they certainly gave it their "all" and made us smile!

ONLY COMPLAINTS: Taxi drivers - the ones we used, so shouldn't generalise - are not a good advertisement for Tunisia. We were definitely ripped off on two occasions. (1) Stupidly we left a suitcase at the airport when we arrived and paid 45 dinar for a round trip to collect it. Apparently, we should have only paid half that amount. (2) We walked to the Port of El Katouheh (by the way its takes a good hour, not the 40 minutes we were told). We had a beautiful early evening meal there at the Mediterranean Restaurant - CAN RECOMMEND - and hailed a taxi to go back to hotel. Whilst getting in asked how much? He replied 10 dinar, too late to get out as he was already moving off, asked that he put the meter but he said it was broken. When we arrived my husband argued the point, Taxi Driver said I tell you 10, Husband says no I only paid 5 yesterday (fib but told by tour guide that 5 dinar was about the right amount and it was only 8 pm.) Driver says 8, husband says 5 and I will take your number and report you to police, driver says o.k. 5!

We also discovered that we are absolutely useless at haggling and most certainly got ripped off in Sousse Medina - beware!

I would recommend this hotel especially as it is being renovated and the health spa is almost complete. Tunisia is a good country to visit. We probably wouldn't go back there for a long time, if at all, but only because there are so many other places in the world that we want to see!

my wife and i decided to celebrate our 10th anniversary in style and we where looking for somewhere that we really wouldnt normally go to and we decided to go to tunisia and we picked sousse ,after looking at different hotels we chose the tour khalef hotel and packed our bags and away whent. after a comfortible flight you have to que up to sign visa's which takes about 10 to 20 mins and that kills time and your bags are on the conveyer belt to pick up ,then after that on to the air conditioned bus ( a blessing indisguise ) 45 mins later we arrive at our hotel and get ourselfs booked and up to our room , so far so good the room we had was very clean and fresh with an excellent view of the med still happy ,we decided to go and venture locally and get a bite to eat .what we found strange was the amount of pizza and pasta restaurants hundreds ,but not to grumble onwards and upwards .the food in the hotel was pretty good and a wide selectionof different meals , even if you are a big eater you would be struggling to conquer the russians ,the really do have agreedy attitude towards food and there manners have a lot to be desired ,didnt let that get to me ,whilist at the pool we met this waiter called yousef who worked at the pool restaurant and he told us that we could have supper there instead of main restaurant which we did and that was our stay complete .the weather was top class and coming from glasgow we dont get a lot of warm sunny mostly rain and frost and thats in july. we had a lot of fun at the beach theres anice wee snack bar there ,check it out .we where only there for 7 days but we where never stationed at the hotel for long ,we did trips to el jem which was amazing , we went on a camel treck and trips to the aqua park in el kintawee( not the right spelling ) and visited there marina brilliant .i must say that 7 days was never enough so we are going back in july 2009 for 2 weeks and we are taking the kids this time ,thats how good we liked it ,try it you never know you might like it ,but if you like rolls in bacon and eggs ,larger and strip clubs and loose woman stay well away spain is real destination not tunisia it has strict and strong beliefs so all you can do is respect the ways ..

My boyfriend and I visited Tunisia at the end of Aug 2008 for a 14 night holiday booked through Thomson, but we had such a bad time that we arranged our own flights home to come back 5 days early. We would have come home even earlier but could not get a flight! If you are looking for a relaxing holiday with a great beach, good food and friendly people DON'T GO HERE! We were all inclusive at this hotel which was a huge mistake...our Thomas Rep at our welcome meeting had warned us that the food had gone down hill recently but nothing could prepare us for what we found! We understand that obviously every country has their own style of food but the food at this hotel was not edible at all......nothing was fresh, the fruit was all bruised and shrivelled, the salad was all shredded into tiny pieces and was all dry and tasteless. The cereal in the mornings was always all crushed up into almost a powder. The meat was awful and smelt and looked like dog food....we even saw some disgusting meat that was all hairy and was covered in some green oily stuff. For the 9 days we were there for we had to live on pizza (after we had taken off the weird toppings!) and stale bread...this was for lunch and dinner! Once we returned to England we didn't want to see another pizza again! While we were away my boyfriend fell in with an ear infection and when you are stranded in the middle of a foreign country you expect to be able to at least rely on the Thomas Rep to help you...but we found our Rep to be very rude, unhelpful and not very understanding at all...along with the hotel staff who chose to not understand us when it suited them. Another huge problem with this hotel is that most of the people staying there are Russian and are very rude. As other reviews have also said there were building works going on the resort right next to the pool. Which were really loud and to try and hide the noise the hotel staff around the pool just turned the music up really load (with the same 5 or so songs playing all day) to try and drown out the noise from the building works. Also at night the entertainment takes place outside right in the centre of all the rooms and is so loud (and the same thing every night!) that you can hear it all night in your room with the doors closed. We are in our 20's so are used to loud music but even we found it to be too loud and going on for too long and as my boyfriend was really ill on the trip the last thing we needed was to not be having a decent night sleep! Most of our time on this 'holiday' was spent near the pool as when we had ventured outside of the hotel grounds but we felt extremely unsafe and only left the grounds when we had to go to the pharmacy (which we had to find ourselves as our Rep was no where to be found). Outside the hotel was dirty and there always seemed to be dead cats everywhere which wasn't very nice! The locally people we encounter were very rude and where just after you're money. As soon as they find out that you from Britain they automatically assume that you are rich and continually pestered us for money. After a few days we decided to visit the beach which is right next to the hotel. This was a big mistake. Firstly, the beach itself is lovely and sandy but it is littered with lots and lots of sun loungers which are just all over the place and just looks really messy. The second and the worst thing about the beach are the local people. My boyfriend and I attempted to take a stroll along the beach walking along the waters edge...but we were continuously pestered by locals trying to sell us rubbish....at one point we had 4 of them at the same time all trying to sell us something different. You try and walk away but they keep following you and the ones selling hats or necklaces will run up to you and place them on you and then wont take them back and just wait for you to pay them in the end we had to just take them off and drop them on the floor!! We lasted about 20 mins on the beach but found it too much and had to go back to the hotel....by now we were fully regretting coming to Tunisia. We had booked an excursion through Thomson - a trip to 'North Africa's Largest Animal Park' in the morning and a cruise on a boat in the afternoon. Well, this animal park was the smallest park ever and took only half an hour to walk around and we were strolling! We sat and watched a sea lion show which was soo painful to watch as it was rubbish and we felt so embarrassed for the poor woman attempted to entertain us! After completing the park we still had just under an hour until our coach was coming to pick us up...so along with everyone else from our coach we were left waiting and waiting at the gates of the animal park all very disappointed from our trip. The afternoon trip on a boat was just as bad. We were sold the excursion by our Rep saying that we would get a meal on the boat and all our drinks would be included! The 'meal' was a few spicy sausages and some bread and the all inclusive drinks was just cheap coke! The trip was booked through Thomson but the Rep didn't come on the boat with us and even though we had already paid for the excursion we were yet again asked for money by the locals who were working on the boat. I had one of them wave their hat in my face asking for money! We experienced this sort of thing (money grabbing) a number of times especially on the way to the airport. As we had arranged to come home early (due to illness) we had to get a taxi to the airport which was arranged but a lady at reception of our hotel (she was the only member of staff that was actually polite and helpful!) she booked it all for us and she took the payment. When our taxi arrived for us we made sure it was the one we booked....only for us to get to the airport and our driver to demand we pay again and he got very aggressive and rude and was on his phone to lots of people even though we had explained that we had already pained through the hotel! After about 20 mins and after seeing that he wasn't going to get away with getting any more money out of us he eventually gave in and admitted that he suddenly remembered that he had been paid through the hotel!!! THEN when we got to the airport we needed to change our money back into sterling. Having a night flight there was only one change bureau open which we had no choice but to use. The man behind the desk didn't have a clue what he was doing and short changed us but about £60. Luckily we stood there and checked it and first he tried to blame it on the exchange rate but after my boyfriend did the working outs on his mobile phone he realised that he wasn't going to get away with it and gave us the rest! AND it didn't stop there! While going through the police checks the Tunisian Policemen were also trying to ask for our spare change to buy coffees! can you believe it...we explained that we had already changed our moeny back into sterling! All in all this 'holiday' was a complete disaster...and we HATED every minute of it. We spent over £1300 on this holiday through Thomson and also had to pay an extra £866 to get early flights home. We have written a formal complaint to Thomson when we arrived home and have only just receieved a letter back (3 months later) which just says that they are sorry and will pass the complaints on, to try and make changes for the future! I would be interested to hear from anyone who as also had a really bad experience like ours at this hotel and if anyone else has tried to contact Thomas to complain. After booking this holiday in Jan 2008 we had spent 8 months looking forward to a lovely holiday and had saved all year to pay for it only for it to turn into the worst holiday every....we had never been so happy to be back in England!!

We stayed at this hotel on two occations in 2007, May / Oct. Both times the hotel was very clean, including the room. The evening entertainment was ok but really geared up for children And the food was great with plenty of choice. The staff were always helpful and good humered. The beach was beautiful and well looked after by the staff. The only fly in the ointment so to speak was the Russians. They were gready, immpolite, and arrigant and do not know how to queue. However we did not let this spoil our holidays. The position of the hotel is really good,it's right on the beach and only a cheap taxi ride or noddy train journey from Sousse or Port El Kantaoui.

We stayed in the Tour Khalef in October 08. The hotel reception area is very clean and constantly been cleaned by the cleaners. The staff were very welcoming...and the porter asisted us to our room, but then he wanted tip...i told him i will give it when i change up the money.
The room that we stayed in did have a distinctive smell...which was not very nice...but we had the doors open...i think the smell was becuase of the toilets and the flushing system.
The restaurant was lovely and there was so much variety...we stayed half board and booked with Thompson. If you book with Thompson you have a choice of 2 restaurants as the reastaurant by the pool is only for Thompson guest. The main restaurant can get busy...especially with the germans/russians....who have no manners...queing system, they also take all the deserts before they even have had there main course....but the staff always fill up more. There is alot of variety in the buffet served.

The kids club rep which is provided for Thompson customer were brilliant...my girls loved being at kids club and the staff were very friendly and welcoming Also to add Fethi the rep for Thompson at Tour Khalef was great and was always there if you needed advise....he was brilliant giving info out and had a great sense of humour.
The hotel is very clean and has a nice eception area....and i would go back there....Soouse is a lovely area.

My husband and I have just returned from this hotel and we would only recommend it to the 18 - 35 age group.

Although the hotel ground floor public rooms were smart and the grounds, pool area and beach area good, the food was poor. The entertainment team played loud music all day and throughout the evening up until midnight, which competed with the building work on the hotel extension.

We did have a pleasant room, with a lovely view over the grounds and up the coast to Sousse, although the decor did need a bit of smartening up. However the constant noise made it impossible to enjoy this holiday at all.

  • Liked — It was fairly clean and there were good views from the balcony
