Have just returned from a truly wonderful Christmas and New Year break at this new - one-year-old - hotel in Sousse, Tunisia. We had lowish expectations as this was a lastminute.com bargain (and a lastminute.com booking), which were far exceeded by the reality. Offering around 600 beds, we figure there were around 50 guests over Christmas and the staff could not have been more pleasant or smiley. The Tunisian hospitality is very special. Gradually, the hotel filled up to around 50% occupancy with a mixture of affluent Tunisians (families very welcome), mostly French and a few British and German guests. The highlights for us were the heated seawater pool - literally like a hot bath, which was fantastic to retreat into when the wind came from a northerly direction (weather consistently sunny throughout and often warm) - the food in the Japanese restaurant, the comfortable sun loungers, and the staff, who were amazing and especially helpful when my husband arrived with a bad knee. The beds are super-comfortable, but we'd say it's worth paying for the sea view as the city view may be noisier. At this time of year a couple of the bars/restaurants in the hotel were closed - we'd been looking forward to the Levant restaurant, but it's summer season only. Other than that, and a few communications issues with the bar staff around the pool - honestly, tiny niggles in the grand scheme of things - we were completely blown away. The spa - and I write this as someone who reviews spas for a living (though paid for this visit) - was utterly fantastic: ultra-luxe, with truly gifted therapists. Great fitness centre, too, with machines overlooking the beach. Tunisia has a hamman culture, of course, and these are the best-of-the-best. We will most definitely be back: just three hours from Gatwick, 25 minutes in a taxi, and you're in relaxation heaven. We have not yet explored Sousse (due to dodgy knee issues) but the medina and souk were pleasant and unhassle-y. But really, at this hotel you have everything you could possibly want.

I travelled to this hotel for the Christmas period, with my Mum and Aunt. Both of which can be hard to please!

We were attempting to get away from the snow and the chaos of christmas. I can honestly say that this was the best hotel that I have stayed in of many. The selection of food was good, the range of activities including the use of gym, outdoor yoga, spa, outdoor hot pool, and location on the beach was ideal.

I had a double room with a balcony and sea view, it was everything that you would expect, clean. I do appreciate the comments made by other reviewers about the firmness of the beds, but by far the best thing about this hotel was the staff. One of the Managers Bessma was very helpful when my TV wasn't working (wanted to see if i would be lucky enough to have a cancelled flight due to the snow).
One of the maids ' Nouredinne' was absolutely lovely, having befriending us putting petals on our beds, and cleaning to an exemplary standard.

Contrary to some other comments, I sought out some of the Tunisian night life, and found a couple shisha places which had live singers- Fish Kiss being the best.

This is one not to miss! My mum has already looked into going back in April for her birthday.

well what can we say like every one else we had read all the reports about the movenpick and was abit concerned but we were delighted with what we found. the food was fantastic, the staff couldnt do enough for you even the cleaning staff came about 3 times a day with fresh towels, the beach and pool staff came to you as soon as you got to your beds with towels and they smelt lovely , when the hotel first opened they did with full clients and i dont think the manager would mind me saying this but he said they had over 650 rooms full and with it being brand new there were a few hiccups but now its running like clock work , well done for making our holiday so nice you all know who you are see you at xmas hilary w

Great Hotel directly on a private beach with a very big outdoor swimming pool + other 3 o 4 pools. The Hall is very nice and great for an afternoon tea. Free wifi in the lobby, for a charge in the rooms. Breakfast is great, service is very good for Tunisia standards! Rooms are nice and have all amenities. Good location to explore Sousse (about 15 minutes on foot to the center) and to move around by car to explore Tunisia!

i was sceptical about the reviews of this hotel before id arrived, i thought it was very unlikely that a swiss 5star hotel would allow for poor service, especially after all the great quality serivce i had in switzerland in the past, but the movenpick sousse really did disappoint. i hahve listed positives and negatives as ive gone through it to avoid it being one sided as there were lots of good things as well as bad.

the hotel itself is beautiful, clean, and very luxurious. the pool staff 'loisirs' were exceptional. without even having to call one over if you were in any need they were there in an instant, and we at no point felt the need to tip. in particular a chap called saleh never stopped working and was racing around making sure towels were plentiful and everyone had a bed. we never had to wait to find one. his colleagues seemed to do equally as well! the security on the beach did a wonderful job keeping outsiders out.

at breakfast we were fortunate to spend one morning near a waiter called belal, who noticed my wife wasnt having any coffee or tea- he enquired why, and quickly fixed things by getting an absolutely wonderful jug of beautiful english tea. from then on, where ever we were sitting for breakfast he would pass on the info to our waiter without us even having to ask and we would have a lovely jug of english tea. now this was 5star service. in aga cafe there was a wonderful waiter (although seemed quite senior) who did a variety of magic tricks and kept us entertained. the cleaners always smiled and welcomed us!

now the problems lay with the lobby staff. we are both very uncomplaining, smiling all the time and speak to all with respect, but none of this was returned. i phoned the first morning down to the lobby to see if an iron was available were i received a rude reply, on another occasion i asked if we could have the double bed which i had paid for (we had two single beds pushed together), and again a rude response saying id have to pay more. we both at this stage realised that we werent going to get much from the lobby staff. there were two female works sitting at a desk in the lobby, i have no idea what the table was for as each time we asked anything they had no idea. they couldnt tell us anything about the nearby surroundings etc, when i asked the main desk for change they kindly did this but just threw my change on to the table- on two occasions. it really is just common human courtesy to lay change into a customers hands. they did go let me use their laptop instead of me having to pay for internet to my room, which they suggested themselves to save me unnecessary cost.

there were only a few times they looked me in the eye when i was speaking to any of them. i must admit though, at times they were helpful, on checkout they told us that the hotel was our home and could still use all the facitilities and a room to freshen up before our flight, when my wife left her iphone in the toilets downstairs the cleaners managed to find it and keep it for us until we returned- a big relief (but hours prior to this i had to phone them 4times from my mobile when we'd realised what had happened and we were an hr away from the hotel- and it took 4 calls for them to be able to help us with the simple request).

restaurants wise, we avoided all inclusive so we could samplel local delights instead, but ate in the levant grill a few times and the villa. sami welcomed us into the villa with great respect and service and the waiters were as you'd expect- friendly and helpful. food was great. we enjoyed the food at levant grill although alot of people had problems there. the first time we went we were ignored and we found our own seats. as we went there regularly though as it was outside and the food was good, the staff did become very friendly to us and the service picked up immensely. most other residents though i dont think gave it a second chance.

the security staff would give us a dirty questioning look each time we walked in (maybe as we didnt have the all inclusive wrist bands) and we were questioned a number of times if we were residents, they did look like a bunch of thugs although some were ok. on one occasion when we entered the hotel there were two members of staff in suits who greeted us with a simple 'good evening' which made the hotel so much more comfortable to be in, a simple of big difference to the ambience of the hotel.

oh yeah- the spa still isnt complete (a bit of a shame we didnt know this at booking as it was one of the reasons we picked movenpick)

i hope ive covered things with a broad mind, i can truly say me and my wife are both simple and pleasant, not demanding at all, and the only reason the bad things stuck so much are because its a beautiful hotel, supposed to be 5star, and just a few improvements in service for the lobby staff would make the world of difference.

i hope readers find this of use, i really wouldnt recommend it if you want 5star service as well as quality hotel, as even after asking for the most simple of things, you're likely to be answered in a rude way.

i am a big fan of swiss hospitalilty, this hotel has very little of it, im very suprised movenpick head office hasnt sent somebody down undercover to start rooting out these problems.
