Le Monaco Residence Hotel & Spa

I wanted to write a bad review, but when I think about whole experience in Sousse, Tunisia in general and after reading some reviews about Movenpick (which costs almost double more ) I am realizing that biggest problem is not in this hotel but it is in Tunisia and its people. It is a shame that country that has that much potential for tourism and is so much dependent on it allows that kind of treatment of tourists.

About hotel. Hotel is not big, sometimes that was a plus, and sometimes not.

Good things - Size of rooms. New furniture, SAT TV, WiFi and kitchen (even has microwave) in rooms. Sheets and towels are very nice on touch, but starting to look overused. Food. Breakfast is descent, but dinner was always great. The cook (I think he is sous chef, one guy with darker skin) is not just good in his job but also he is a great person. I got the impression he works whole day, but still he is always in full speed, smiling, always there to help. Also one waiter with mustache was also cool and helpful. Walking distance from both Medina and modern clubs and bars. On the beach. Spa. No bugs.

Bad things - Management of the hotel, who really needs to put more pressure on the stuff. Maids. Finishing touches of interior and exterior of hotel. Not having free indoor pool or heated outside pool (we had some bad weather). Activities for kids, there is none for them. Speed in fixing broken things in rooms - is it really that hard to change a cheap shower head?

Some things from start in our room didnt work properly or at all- one AC unit, shower head, one blind. Kitchen was not properly clean on our arrival, there was grease in microwave and on the cooktop.

Cheap details in spa - Expensive pool with hydro massage system, hammam, etc and cheap Chinese bathroom curtains on rusted rails, and rusted cheap door knobs.

This wasn't my first time in Tunisia, I went there six years ago, and I have noticed that country has changed for worse. Now there are much more aggressive and crook sellers. In restaurants waiters tell different prices to Arabic and to western guests, even prices were sometimes different in English and in Arabic menu, if there were any. Privately owned supermarkets are really overpriced, double than GM. Taxi drivers are often reluctant now to use taximeter. I did notice that in Port El K. situation is much better, like it was before. In new part of Sousse you get good service in restaurants and you pay same price like everybody. Streets are now really full of garbage, even in the most posh parts of Sousse. We had problem to change money in Saturday morning (9am), finally after 20 minute of driving trough city center and trying to find some place to change money, we had luck, but we did get 180 TD for 100 euros.

The room was quite nice, there was a nice outdoor pool and the hotel is really close to the beach.
There was also an indoor pool but it was only open between 13:00 and 14:00!
Walking to the center of Sousse takes about 20min.
The personnel was really impolite and not helpful at all. I would not recommend this hotel, there are many hotels in Sousse to choose from so I would definitely recommend that you try another one. The Mövenpick hotel is very close Le Monaco and that looks really nice.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the left hand side when facing the ocean. On the other side is a construction site.

Considering that Sousse is mainly a touristic destination due to its beaches, being there for Business travel lets you feel quit unease. The pictures on the internet site of the hotel are giving the impression of a bigger structure, than what it actually is. Generally speaking, the hotel is mainly clean and the personnel is rather friendly. Big and rather good furnished rooms with small kitchen welcome you and give you a general good impression. Being on travel for business purposes, I really appreciated the the free-of-charge Wi-Fi connection. Restaurant is giving a small choice of international as well as local gastronomie.

I was in the monaco in low season - a bit depressing necause deserted. Upon arrival my credit card was not accepted (not my fault) I had to pay cash.

My room was not cleaned properly, I found long hair in the bathroom and bed...

Besides that, it was o.k., close to the beach, the covered salt water pool can be used from 1 pm until 2:30 pm. The italian restaurant at the corner is good.

Even though the breakfast room opens at 7AM, the buffet was not ready before 8AM and the tables were still dirty from the dinner the day before. Hotel
The hotel seems a little older, but is newly renovated. The staff is really nice and helpful, despite at breakfast. There is a medium sized swimming pool, which may be overcrowded on the weekends when a lot of Tunesians stay at the hotel, and a small private beach with direct access. There is no child care or playground close by.

Rooms
The hotel has very large rooms with a large bathroom, kitchen and a balcony. Our double room even included three beds. Due to the layout of the hotel, there is no real seaview. The rooms are clean and seem newly renovated.

Breakfast
As mentioned, the staff for breakfast is very unmotivated. Even though the breakfast room opens at 7AM, the buffet was not ready before 8AM and the tables were still dirty from the dinner the day before. However, once everything is served, the choice is quite good and there is a lot of fresh fruits.

Location
It is located close to the city center of Sousse (20-30 min walk, 5 min by taxi for about 1-2DN). From Sousse, most destinations in Tunesia can be easily reached as a day trip, including Tunis, i.e. by train, Kairuan, by louage or bus and Monastir by metro. Several supermarkets and souvenir stores are just a few meters from the hotel.

Other
The hotel provides free WLAN internet access in the lobby and in all rooms. There are no internet PCs, so a laptop is needed to go online. A safety deposit box can be rented for 15DT (approx. 7.50 EUR) per week.

Conclusion:
It is a good value for money hotel for those who wish to do sight seeing around Tunesia and go for a short swim in the afternoon.

This Hotel dosen't deliver 4 stars, that was the first impression we got as soon as we opened the door to our room. The room was dirty and very small, nothing like what we bookede, we didn't get the balcony we orderede. But the worst thing was the attitude in the front desk. you can see that they try to trick you off and lie direct to your face. I don't think the know the word service.
The Beach:
In Sousse you can only stay on the beach if the beach have it's own " place" on the beach, otherwise it is very difficult to find af place because of the local people. they won't let you relax for a minut. and apperently our hotel didn't do any thing to keep local people away from their beach property.
The Pool:
Due to the religion in the country it is understandable that some women have to have hijab and more clothes then a bikini. but they don't have to contamine the hole pool. the pool staff didn't do anything about those who jumped in the pool with FULL Colthing ON!!
The Hotel:
There is a contruction work next to the hotel, and as I saw it it will be there the next 2 years, and eventhough your travelagency and the hotel says that it won't destroy you vacation DON'T believe that. it will. our travel agancy told us that the contruction work only would last from 0900 in the morning til 17 BUT NO: they start at 0600 in the morning an continue to 2200 in the evening.
The people:
They overlook any girl walking bye. (with open mouth)
Don't bye anything from people selling things on the beach. the will try to trick you no matter what.
Be carefull walking in small streets with a lot of small shops. they push you litteretly in the shop and will pressure you to bye something.
Don't waste your money here:
Sousse: because of the people and the bad hotels.
Hammamet: because here the jetset of tunisia having their vacation, and if you don't wan't to wait 2 hour before they take your order og service you don't go there. The tunisien jetset (rich people) gives a lot of tips. and the waiters ans so on will service them first.

If you absoulutly want to visit tunisia, visit port el kantoui.
