“Staff was fabulous”
Reviewed September 17, 2006

My friend and I based our ten day trip to egypt out of the Windsor Palace and couldn't be more pleased with our choice -

The rooms were lovely and clean, complimentary breakfast was something to look forward to, and the staff bent over backwards to help us book trips.... It was like coming back to our friends each evening!

Location, across the street from the sea, was fantastic and within easy walking distance to shopping, food, and the bibliotheca alexandrina. We look forward to returning.

The ceilings in the sitting room are beautiful, and the hotel is quaint, comfortable and conveniently located.

However, after taking a shower I discovered my towel had been smeared with faeces, refolded and put back on the rack by a person unknown. After taking another very long shower I took the towel to reception. They sent up clean towels and a platter of fruit, but I never received an apology or an explanation.

Later, I ordered two cups of tea from room service, which I paid for upon delivery (with tip). When booking out of the hotel I was asked to pay again for this service, and there was a stand off with the manager being called. After the incident with the towel I was not willing to pay twice for a few cups of tea, and was eventually allowed to leave without doing so.

Had it not been for the two incidents mentioned and the disinterest of the front desk staff I think I would have really loved staying at this hotel.

Windsor Palace hotel is one of several 3/4-star hotels located on the seafront within walking distance of each other and built at the beginning of the 20th century. The other two are the Sofitel Cecil and the Metropole (same owners as Windor Palace). I went for two weeks to finish a writing assignment and was based at the hotel and at the magnificent new Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Library of Alexandria). The hotel was recently refurbished, rooms are large, clean and have balconies. Staff are cheery, eager to help and speak many languages. Best bits have got to be the oldie worldie lifts, a giant lounge, live pianist at 7pm every evening. No broadband Internet at the time of writing and there are cheaper ways to make international calls than using the hotel's phone system. A room with a "sea-side view" means your balcony will open out at 90-degrees to the sea; "Sea view" rooms openout directly onto the Med.

Recently returned from a visit to Alexandria. We went up by train 1st class. The train was filthy, it could really do with a clean and this is first class and it took 3 hours. Next time I would pay the extra and go by car. Stayed at Windsor Palace Hotel. Looks like Metropole on the outside. Has a wonderful old lift and the rooms are like a palace, high ceilings. The room was basic and clean. The toilet took a while to fill up when flusing. The beds were the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in a hotel and we didnt hear a single noise from other occupants. The food was good and cheap and it is the first mini bar that I have come across where the items are cheaper than buying it outside. Just a word of mention, at reception there is a note which says that foreigners are not allowed to pay with Egyptian pounds, they must pay with foreign currency? Staff were friendly.
Alexandria we saw the Montazah gardens, bit over rated and katacombs, creepy and I felt I couldnt breath. Saw the roman ruins but didnt see the mosaics. Alexandria was a bit of a disappointment.
