Staying in the Alexandria Hilton Green Plaza hotel for a few nights, I decided to treat my driver to dinner. The restaurant is outside, just off the lobby. Descending a few steps there was no one to greet us so we peeked around the wall and found a very contemporary Asian restaurant and a staff that apparently was not expecting anyone at that hour; we were early.
Nonetheless, they quickly sat us, brought us complimentary appetizers and took our orders. The menu is divided between Chinese and Thai, the latter dishes clearly indicated as spicy. We settled on the Chinese. Service was very courteous and professional and quick enough.
I put the dinner on my room and noticed after I reviewed the hotel bill against the restaurant receipt that they tend to add about 1.5% to the bill. Also, on checkout I found that they charged my invoice in USD rather than EGP and the conversion rate was a hefty 5% premium! The bank slip one signs states that "you have been informed of the charge." No I wasn't. And they had the temerity to inform me that it was in my favor - that my bank would charge me more. No.They.Don't. I have traveled internationally for more than 30 years and I have lived in Egypt for 15 of those years. I know EXACTLY what my bank charges and they still charge a 3% foreign transaction fee on top of any transaction. So that just cost me 8 points, my friends. Plus the 1.5% premium on the restaurant bill. NICE LITTLE SCAM the hotel has running.
So watch your bills at this hotel. But I can recommend the Ginger restaurant.
