Viewing Roman and or Greek sites is a little Ho Hum after spending time in Egyptian sites but when in Alexandria its all that is left.

I spent about an hour visiting Pompey's Pillar and took home some wonderful memories of the Romans presence in Egypt. The underground libraries were the highlight of my experience, with all the winding passageways and narrowing walls. Simply amazing! Allow at least an hour to explore and be sure to look into the small "entrance" at the base of the pillar!

We really enjoyed our trip to Pompeys Pillar, the area itself was very quiet and there were only a few other tourists visiting at the same time as us. The underground libraries were fantastic and the two tourists police that joined us made our experience more fun, they earned their Backshish! The Pillar itself and accompanying sphinxes were impressive and you can get up close which meant some great photographs. Allow approx 1 ½ hours for the visit. Pompeys Pillar was excellent value for money.

The pillar is quite tall and is one of the few things left to prove that the Romans were actually in Egypt. As you make your way to the pillar, there is a kind of outdoor museum like in Memphis that you can look at where stuff like headless sphinxes are lined up in a row. I suggest that you take a picture of yourself and the pillar as soon as you enter after buying your ticket--20 L.E.

Good place to reckon the history with some underground rooms. This place will take around 1 to 1.5 hours to explore. The place is surrounded by residential areas and it is hidden among these. One of the largest monolithic column ever erected...!!
