The new modern library opened in 2002. It is believed to be built near the site where the Great Library of Alexandria was located. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina sits on around ten acres of land on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The current library functions as a library and cultural center. It also houses the International School of Information Science. The Bibliotheca is trilingual and houses books in Classical Arabic, English, and French. The gift of books from the Bibliothèque nationale de France makes the Bibliotheca Alexandrina the sixth-largest Francophone library in the world. There are four museum and art galleries for temporary exhibitions. Impressive on the outside and the inside, this magnificent library is an experience above many others. I would say it is “a must see” place to go.
