Owner description: Located near the site of the ancient library of Alexandria, this modern version is an eleven-story, cylindrical-shaped building that houses more than eight million books. A re-imagining of Alexandria's ancient Great Library, this gorgeously designed cultural center contains a host of museums as well as one of the modern world's most ambitious libraries. Its architecture - a giant sun disk - presides over the waterfront Corniche, while inside, a huge reading room can hold eight million volumes. Below themain library, visitors can explore a range of beautifully curated exhibitions. TheManuscript Museum with its magnificent collection of ancient texts and scrolls and the Antiquities Museum with its Graeco-Roman antiquities and statuary found during underwater exploration in the harbor are the two prime attractions. But there are also rotating art exhibitions, a permanent Egyptian folk art collection, and a Science Museum and Planetarium that are aimed squarely at children.

Although this is not the original great library, the new one is well designed and beautiful. The reading area is big and with gentle nature light. Some exhibition rooms downstairs. Rooms for antiquities and manuscripts need extra tickets unless your entrance ticket covers them as well (printed on the ticket). The most impressive thing was the introduction of the online projects the library was working on.

My husband organised a surprise, lets get 2013 off to a good positive start, magical mystery tour yesterday.

We went to Alexandria by train and arrived to be whisked directly to the door of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. At the heart of it is a library design to commemorate and eventually rival the ancient library of Alexandria which was probably the major library of the ancient world and was destroyed in Roman times.

I have to admit to knowing virtually nothing of it an advance so the reality was a complete and wonderful surprise. The main library is design like a disc which represents the rising sun, and the power of knowledge in the world, and is tilted to take advantage of the land on which it lies, right next to the sea front. It is the most wonderful airy space, filled with students. But that is just the start of the experience, the building is packed with art galleries, museums of antiquities, a wonderful rare books exhibition, a planetarium and numerous other galleries and displays. To get a taste go to the helpful website.

You really could happily spend a day in there though we didn't have time to and the teenage children needed feeding! There is a cafe, although we didn't visit it. Those boxes for amenities which I haven't ticked does not mean they are not available, it just represents things I can't vouch for personally.

A guide will take you through this amazing library. It holds over 1.5 million books and contains several permanent and temporary museums for art and literature. Some have an extra entrance fee.

Visiting this huge bibliteque thinking of the importance of the old burnt one was really an experience, I'd say I felt more astonished there than in front of Pyramids, it's a monument to culture, to studies to intelligences. with the ticket you also get one hour of connection in one of the many computers inside, using internet there was awsome.

It was my first time at the library of Alexandria. I will say that the most amazing feature was the architecture of the place. There were many wings of the building next to book shelves and reading places. The most interesting where the museums of antiquities and of president Sadat, and also the Art galleries. Very nice exhibitions and you may spend few hours enjoying the place. The only disappointment I had was because all these interesting places were permanent parts of the library, and I didn't see much seasonal activities like seminars, musicals, youth exhibitions, workshops....etc.
