Owner description: Located near the site of the ancient library of Alexandria, this modern version is an eleven-story, cylindrical-shaped building that houses more than eight million books. A re-imagining of Alexandria's ancient Great Library, this gorgeously designed cultural center contains a host of museums as well as one of the modern world's most ambitious libraries. Its architecture - a giant sun disk - presides over the waterfront Corniche, while inside, a huge reading room can hold eight million volumes. Below themain library, visitors can explore a range of beautifully curated exhibitions. TheManuscript Museum with its magnificent collection of ancient texts and scrolls and the Antiquities Museum with its Graeco-Roman antiquities and statuary found during underwater exploration in the harbor are the two prime attractions. But there are also rotating art exhibitions, a permanent Egyptian folk art collection, and a Science Museum and Planetarium that are aimed squarely at children.

“Not Just An Amazing Piece of Modern Architecture”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

Right across from my favourite cafe in Alexandria and next door to the University is the Bibliotheca Al Iskanderyya. This wonderful building was built to replace the old one destroyed by fire many many years ago and not only houses a modern library with ancient documents but, is also a museum. There are many many interesting artifacts here as well as a history of the city from Pharonic and Ptolomeic times through to the modern age. This is well worth a visit. There is a small fee to enter but if you are seriously interested in the history of this wonderful and amazing city it is well worth a visit. The photographs of the city in it's hayday are wonderful although the city still has a sort of faded decadence you can see it in all it's glory!!!! A wonderful place to hang out for a few hours. A guide is available for those who want it. As Alex is my second home (my husband is Alexandrian) and I speak Arabic this was not necessary but they seemed to be very very knowledgable and, as with all Egyptians, extremely helpful to those who needed it. The auditorium is used for concerts, plays and other artsy type things for the community and are affordable to the local populus as well as visitors. There is just too much to see here I cannot possibly cover it in one go but please.............go if you are Alex.......I am quite sure you will not be disappointed!!!!

“One beautiful library. Quite an experience!”
Reviewed November 19, 2012 via mobile

Easily the most beautiful and interesting library I've ever visited, and we live near Seattle's! The library itself is enormous due to the 8 million books they plan to shelve there (there are 1.6 million now). The vintage printing presses were interesting as well. The books themselves were standard fare for any library. The real excitement comes from visiting the antiquities museum, the sunken recoveries room, the Astad Museum, the art galleries, the rare books and manuscripts room, the library for the blind, the visual media room...this place is really packed! All of it was interesting, too; great way to spend an afternoon. Missed the planetarium show, unfortunately!
