Whilst a historic building, this hotel is a relic and certainly does not meet usual sofitel standards. If you do book then just don't expect a luxury experience and you won't be disappointed. Location is good but noisy.

I stayed here for the literary connections, and the sense that we would be looked after, and wasn't disappointed. It's completely charming in its architecture, perfectly located, and my room looked out on the ancient harbour. The butler came to our room to introduce himself and was a wonder all weekend, having dessert delivered to the bar, and providing unobtrusive service with great style. My only negative would be the lack of a roof-top bar (a chinese restaurant seemed an odd choice to put on the roof - for a bar, head to the windsor down the road). But the Cecil is a grand old dame of a hotel, and has the best antique lifts I have ever had the pleasure to ride. I recommend it unreservedly.

I am writing this review now while I am wide awake at 3 am in the morning because of the noise ( drums /base) vibrating in my room from the hotel disco . My room is on the 1st flor number 110 . Unbelievable street noise as well as the base sound from night club . I just informed the reception and was told they will try to lower if a bit and I asked what time does it close I was informed 5 am !! I don't think I will be staying here again . View of Mediterranean Sea is breathtaking as well as the breeze but unfortunately can't open the window because it feels like sleeping on the highway with all the street noise what a shame ! Reception promised to try and change my room tomorrow will see .

Stayed there for 2 nights on business this week and stayed in a very nice room overlooking the sea. The hotel is old and could do with some more work to be upgrade it, but it is still very nice and cozy. The room I stayed in was very nice, spacious and with a great view of the Mediterranean. The restaurant and cafe are on the ground floor and have a very nice feel about them. The breakfast was very good and had all the basics and well prepared.
The hotel is very central if you plan to be in central downtown but because Alex. is spread out along the coast, you need to know exactly where you will spend most of your time to chose the proper hotel.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better and view of the sea or the Raml square is the best. The first floor...

If you want to go back in time by a century or so, Cecil is your hotel. Historic, full to Victorian age touches that add to the atmosphere, host to many a legendary name in its time, featured in literature and cinema, overlooking the Mediterranean, this is a hotel for the romantic at heart. Also, this is the heart of the business district, so very convenient.

Located at the centre of the Corniche by the sea, its location could hardly be better for the holidayer. This is a fairly small hotel – 86 rooms, but then it dates back to an era when this would have been enough. The entrance is through the side street, which overlooks the Saad Zaghloul square. The lobby area and reception are comfy, though not too large. Check in for us – a group, was smooth, but again interested guests were already be admiring the art deco stuff – the pillars, mirrors, lamps, sofas, and the piece de resistance – the lift and surrounding stairwell. There is a shop for curios on the ground floor. The free wifi works only in the lobby, and only half hour at a time.

I had a side view room, which meant I could see the sea from a balcony that extended from my room. I had an eastern view – a sweep of the curving bay very reminiscent of Bombay’s Marine Drive. Rooms have a lot of atmospheric furniture too. The mirror in my room specially stood out. Bedcovers, drapes, a table and chair set, lattice work, an old cupboard – all good till the novelty lasts. There is an AC. The room seemed a little small – especially with so much furniture. There is a tea/ coffee maker, and three apples! Thankfully a bottle of water too. However modern amenities were less. Hardly any plug points. Toiletries are not Hermes but called Sofitel. The washroom is a little jam-packed, and the shower opens over the bath. There is a TV with quite a few international channels, though I checked the part about the hotel's history!

The dining area – tried only one for dinner, breakfast and lunch – was nice, overlooking the sea. Beautiful wall frescos matched the largely white décor, matching cutlery, a generous use of flowers add to the charm - all reminiscent of an era long gone, but charming nevertheless. Breakfast buffet choices were extensive, largely continental, though there was some falafel and hummus too. Breads, beans, cold cuts, cheese, yogurts, salad choices, eggs made to order, cakes, a few hot dishes, juices, tea, coffee - all in setting that could fool you into thinking you were in an English manor but for the shimmering blue sea when you looked out of the window. Lunch and dinner were continental again – limited choices (pasta, rice, fish, chicken, lamb) and a little slow. There is a Chinese restaurant in the hotel, and of course right outside are many lovely cafes.

Staff were nice and helpful, though not everyone in housekeeping seemed to know English. This hotel could do with an upgrade, till then a short spell should wonders for you! It's an experience.

Room Tip: Avoid lower floors – the sound from the hotel disco can go till early hours.

This is the worlds worst hotel. Blaring music with drums and microphones until after 5:30 am. It is an old hotel so the music and drums vibrate through the walls. I had to speak with the management, who did the 'it is out of our hands speech' and it was thumping until the dawn. This is not a hotel for families, your eyes will be disgusted with what you may see in the hotel lobby when you go down to complain in the middle of the night (Think skippy lycra clad young females of the night, holding up old drunken men from spattering their whisky in the lobby). I was shocked at the decay of the building, staff uniforms, utilities and lack of public decency. It costs of fortune in tips to get basic things into the room like a broken old ironing board and a kettle. It is very dusty and the bathroom had blood stains on the tiles. It is very outdated and uncomfortable. I would never ever recommend anyone to stay there and feel that it was a robbery of £100 per night without breakfast- in addition the food menu is outdated and seriously over priced. I wish that I had read the reviews on trip advisor first.
