Great place - convenient but noisy location

Review of Egypt Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 28, 2012
My two friends and I stayed one night. The room was clean, the atmosphere pleasant, the staff friendly, and the beds comfortable. The view was great. It was quite noisy between the traffic on the Corniche on one side and the tram on the other. Great location for sightseeing though.

A nice budget hotel in the Downtown of Alexandria. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Most of the rooms facing towards the sea, ask for one. The rooms are basic but neat and clean. The washrooms are small for a family. It is located in the old building on the 3rd or 4th floor (I cant remember). The elevator of building is quite old and look scary but it is working fine. The local Egyptian family who is running this Hotel is of the view to improve its quality as per guest choices to attract more travelers. Overall its a nice option to stay within Budget.

Room tip: Ask for the Sea View /facing room.

Stayed 2 nights as part of a Geckos tour. Hotel occupies 1 floor of a building that was built around 1900. The lift looked positively scary but worked fine when I was game enough to use it! Otherwise just take the stairs. Lots of antique furniture, paintings, tapestries etc around. The rooms are very basic but clean enough. Location is good, right on the Corniche about a 10 mins walk in one direction to the Library, about 30 mins walk in the other direction to the fish markets and restaurants. Staff were very friendly and always happy to see us after we'd been out exploring, internet access in the reception area (need to ask for password). Our only problem was the noise from the trams behind the hotel, there is a staion right there and they rumbled past all night (thought it was an earthquake at first!)

The Egypt Hotel is located on the 3rd floor of an office building in a pretty decent location on A 10-minute walk to the Library of Alexandria and maybe 25-30 minutes to the Citadel of Qaitbay - a nice walk along the coastline and past the beaches. Plenty of reasonable coffee shops & restaurants in very close proximity to the hotel, many with a nice view of the Mediterranean.

Looking up from the outside, broken windows on the 2nd floor had me wondering about the condition of the hotel, but was pleasantly pleased once we got up there. There is a very old & small elevator, or you can walk up the few flights. The hotel lobby is bright and decorated with some antique-type furniture. The staff spoke some English and were friendly & helpful. Rooms are dated with just basic furnishings and the bathroom is small, but there has a shower with plenty of hot water — all-in-all, good enough. The air conditioner was whisper quiet, but the noise from the street not so much. Breakfast (included) came with a good variety of fresh pita, cheeses, jam, olives, instant coffee or tea.

Room tip: There's a balcony and we were able to see the Mediterranean from our room, but room on the front would have the perfect view.

We picked this hotel based on lonely planet saying it was the only reasonable mid-range in Alexandria. Not sure we would call it mid-range anywhere else but was good compared to other places we have stayed in Egypt - rooms were a little run-down (torn lino, door to balcony didn't completely close) and while the balcony overlooking the corniche was amazing, it did mean that the room was quite noisy and may troublesome for light sleepers. The shower was excellent for Egypt but the breakfast was average. The staff here were excellent with really good English and helped wherever they could. Overall perhaps a little overpriced but a good option to gaurantee a decent place in Alexandria.

The Hotel is located in the middle of the Corniche and the rooms can be noisy because of the streets but the friendly staff and the location make up for the street noise. Anyway, it's Alexandria so enjoy it's vibe :)
