If you want to spent a few days in the middle of wild nature, not in a 7* hotelroom, I reccomend you to rent a room in a simply house of a local in village in the middle of the Delta e.g. in Chilia Veche. Most locals have their own boats, and can you guide through the Delta. We had this option, and it was a good decision. They cook excellent, local recipes, mostly fish in very diferent ways. In four days we have seen wild horses , boars, pelicans, otters, water lilies, we rescued shags, stroken WILD!!! cormorants, wisited the Letea woods, the oldest tree of Romania, Sulina, and we have made 16 GB of photoes, only for 100 Euro/pers/4 days including accomodation, one meal per day (in the evening) boat hire, gasoline, guid. Do not forget home sunglasses and teleobjective... You have also opportunities for fishing
But be aware of the road from Tulcea to Chilia veche is veri bad, you need a SUV, ore find an opportunity for going with boat. (locals usually have SUVs)

The Danube Delta is a place you must see, except the case you are the shopping or party tourist type. Wonderful nature, hundred of bird and fish species, silence and water.

May be a little to silent or even boring for those not impressed by nature, may be very frustrating for photographers but absolute superb for the ones with enough patience, may be a little dirty in some places but spectacular allover.

Would recommend hiring a local boatman or kayaking by your own. Keep of the beaten track and you'll fall in love with the area.

This is by far the most boring cruise tour I have ever experienced. I recently visited Constanta Romania on the P&O ''Azura'' Black Sea Cruise and was fascinated by the description given re the Danube Delta cruise brochure information. It was a long long day. Firstly you drive about 150 kms across Romania to a little town of Tulcea. There are 3 or 4 double decked ferry type vessels moored there that hold about 20 people each and then you set off Indian file in search of the fabled bird sanctuary. Your anticipation is immense!!! Unfortunately you wind up travelling through about 60 kms of man made canals, all of which look exactly the same from the moment you enter till the moment you leave (after about 4 hours of mundane water travel later). The only points of interest are the fishermen that line the canals as it must be their way of enjoying life. There were hundreds of family groups and mates all along the canals. a happy lot and always keen to give us a wave. Finally you arrive at the bird sanctuary. Honestly we saw 3 birds!!!! One I think was a metal decoy as it never moved for the hour that we were there while eating our almost inedible lunch. I felt so sorry for the enthusiasts who had taken their telescopic cameras for the big event. I'm from Australia and you can come to my place and there are at least 50 birds in my backyard at any given time. The drive back from Tulcea was even more mundane, although I was fascinated by the walnut trees which were growing along the roads on the way back. We watched, as many of the population stole the current crop. Romania is a desolate place and to drive 150 kms there and back was awful. 100,000 wind turbines capturing the wind off the Black Sea loses its charm after a while. Desolate villages and barren landscapes don't make for exciting travel. The young lady who was our guide for the day was excellent and spoke great English but this was definitely not the best and it was not her fault. Fortunately when we got back to Constanta it appears that we had missed nothing as all the other tours were pretty drab also. No wonder there are so many Romanians heading for the hotspots of Europe, I'd be leaving too.

The Danube Delta has an impressive flora and fauna, which should definitely be explored by a small boat. To find a boat is not difficult. At Tulcea waterfront there are many boats waiting for tourists. However, before you book, you should inquire exactly what is on offer. Hours of driving along both sides of the excavated and secured main arm of the delta is boring. Interesting however is driving on the big and small side branches. Here you get a glimpse of life of humans and animals in the Delta. Therefore, it is advisable to take a smaller boat. Also you can do such a boat trip with a typical Delta lunch delta being taken in one of the settlements in the Delta - this is often sold together with the boat tour. The time frame of at least six to eight hours seems necessary since it initially takes some time to really get into the Delta.
