Traditional Bulgarian meals in a beautifully restored and decorated house in the old part of Varna near the Sea Gardens and the Naval Museum. Paraklisa is a gem; it's obviously a labor of love by the owner, Penka Mihova, whose philosophy and spirit fill the place.

The menu includes salads and appetizers, dishes with meat (all kinds of meat, poultry and fish), without meat (the "everyday fasting dishes") and desserts. Everything comes in full and half portions, which is great because the full portions are huge.

I visited with a group of Bulgarian friends for dinner and had a salad/appetizer sampler and a pork casserole called Tanasovata which had pork loin, white beans, beets, red peppers, and a little bit of mint. We shared a dessert sampler plate at the end.

Don't come here if you are in a hurry; everything here is made from scratch and many of the dishes are long-cooking ones so your food will not appear immediately. However, with a good group and conversation it is well worth the wait.

Finally: the owner sells a cookbook of the recipes and an English translation is available, so I bought one. The book has great content and pictures is well worth the 6 leva to anyone interested in traditional Bulgarian food and culture.

On what was our second trip to the Paraklisa it did not disappoint. Food is authentic and there is a wide choice of what they call meatless everyday dishes (vegetarian) in full or half portions. All accompanied by an excellent musical trio who take requests!
