“Great public spaces but don't eat the food”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

I stayed at this hotel for three nights with a group. It was conveniently located being only a short walk from the centre and the public rooms were fantastic. Out room was perfectly good - bland as all chain hotels are- but clean and reasonably spacious. The food, however, was atrocious.Breakfast was OK but the two evening meals we had here were simply substandard and were excused on the grounds that we were a group and shouldn't expect better. The other hotels we visited in Bulgaria managed something very much better so this excuse didn't hold water.

This hotel would be great if it was near the city center. Still not bad although the rooms are a bit musty. Bathrooms are decent though and a 15 min walk or 5 min cab to center. Took home a good bit of LEV from the casino across the street too. :)

The Novotel in Plovdiv is one of theis curious occasions where the hotel seems to have spend loads on the public areas, like reception, bar, pools etc, but nothing above the ground floor.... The InterConti in Geneve is an other one.

So, arriving at the Novotal is nice. Friendly welcome. Good Englsih speaking staff, all very friendly. Lobby looks nice and modern and so does the Vienna Cafe (don't know why they choose an Austrian name for that...).
Going up to the room.... big disappointment. We're back in the communist era! Dark brown walls, ugly carpets, bathroom from the 70ies....
I had booked a "suite"...no way you can call this a suite! It turned out to be a normal double room, but with connecting doors to the next room...that did not have a bed, but a couch, desk etc.
The views are great, though. I looked over the new part of twon (not that impressive), bit if you ahve aroom on the other side of the building, you see the old town, the maritsa river etc. Truely beautiful!

So in short; public areas great (except for restaurant/breakfast room, by the way...again back at communism) and for business I guess a very good choice. Rooms themselves...bad!!! So for a touristic/private trip, I recommnmed one of the nice small hotels in the old town. They won't be 5 star, which Novotel claims to have I think, but you'll have a much metter experience!

Room Tip: Take a room on the river side!

Novotel Plovdiv was great. Helpful staff, breakfast included and all the facilities you needed. Has a great pool and everything is very cheap. Would stay here again. Close to the Plovdiv Mall where the shopping is magnificent. Restaurants close by that are excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for the newly renovated rooms.

If you go to Novotel in Bulgaria, don't be expecting a 4 start American hotel. It is a typical European hotel and is not bad compared to other European hotels that I have stayed in. Actually, the room that I stayed in was better than other European hotels that I've stayed in. The internet is fairly fast and easy to connect. The t.v. well, I only speak english fluently so theT.V. had two channels I could understand. Beer is extremely cheap about $1.25 and there a lot of restraunts, bars, and a shopping center right next to the hotel. The staff extremely friendly, the bathroom clean and sanitary, and the room was nice as well. The only negative part was there was a little mold on the wall and no laundry facilities. However, they do offer to do your laundry, but it's a little expensive (about $5 for a pair of pants) I highly reccommend going through shopping center bridge and eating at the restraunt that is on your right, coming from the hotel and walking over the bridge. It is very good! A free breakfast is offered in the morning that consists of real eggs, cheeses, fruit, orange juice, coffee, cereal, pancakes, french toast, etc... It was good. The Massages are very cheap and they are awesome!! one of the best I've received.

Its name should say it all but I am afraid that if you are expecting a real Accor/Novotel experience you are bound for a little disappointment. Not that you have too many other choices in Plovdiv. Its an old, very old, building. Its a perfect sample of what architecture and hotel business in the Soviet times understood for "luxury". Probably built in the 70´s, its well kept Russian type 4 star hotel. Location its perfect. Lobby, again, its well kept but huge and leads to large convention area with meeting rooms of all sizes. The lobby bar...well....what lobby bar? Despite the obvious sign hanging from the wall "lobby Bar"...there is no lobby bar. And when you find it, walk away. A coffee 1,50 euros???....dubious looking sandwich 4 euros?. Nahhhh.litt ...just walk across the square in front of the hotel and you will find plenty small cafes, more hospitable and reasonably priced. Rooms are good size. Actually they are large rooms. Furniture still survives aging and I guess they will become "timeless". For those who like "art deco" of the 50´s you will have a blast. Beds are old, mattresses are older and uncomfortable. Good luck in the bathroom. The building was most likely build by a french architect and/or under french standards. The wc sits in a small, non ventilated side room to the bathroom. A real mess with the faucets and water tabs. It will take you a few minutes to decide what opens what. And if anyone can explain me why the sink has an cordon shower...?. You will need two towels to dry up...they extremely small. TV options are dull. A/C works properly and water supply its correct. Carpet needs replacement.

Pluses: free, hassle-free wifi, large in-room safe, can hold a sizable computer; prompt response to maintenance issues (there shouldn't have been any), OK breakfast.
Minuses: old-fashioned architecture, gloomy lighting in public areas including the bkfst room, inflexible reception staff (asked for passports to be handed in, was promptly refused by our group, wasted 20 minutes of 20 persons' time), rooms sorely short on spare electric sockets.
Special Mention - the Bathroom: some fixtures on the verge of being broken, low water pressure, very slippery bathtub, installed at a height suitable for young athletes only and troubling noises emanating from (pipes?) behind the walls and above the ceiling.
