“Pretty but a tourist trap”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

The Roman Theatre is accessed by walking over very rough stone streets. It is up a hill but not a problem for a person of average fitness. The site is protected by thick iron bars but the view of the theatre and Plovdiv city is still good. For a relatively high fee you can pass through the fence and enter the theatre. We chose not to as it is relatively small as amphi-theatres go and did not see that it offered value for money. It was hot so we tried to buy cold water from the adjacent kiosk. Only room temperature water was available and it was selling at a premium. A much better option is to fill up at the spring beside the mosque on the way up.

“Great restoration”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Only discovered due to a landslide in the 1970's, this is a fantastic place to hear a concert or see an opera if you can manage it. To imagine that all the columns and seating have been in place in Roman times is magical.

“Uncrowded, no pushy vendors.”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

A well preserved relic of Roman times, with good views over the town. A coffee shop just outside which lets you sit for an indefinite time.

“DIY ruins, great views.”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

You need to use you imagination, bring a guide book or come on an organised tour because there were no interpretive materials at the site at all.
You can walk, crawl, climb all over the ruins and take in the amazing views over the city and surrounding area.
There were attempts to remove graffiti (Plovdiv is FULL of it!) from the old stones and some scrub was being cleared, but apart from that the site felt quite neglected.

“A truely great example of Roman architecture”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

This is a great Theatre and it is really cool that it is being used today for concerts and theatre productions. We were treated to a practice opera performance and the acoustics are amazing.
