It made a bad impression with the dirty toilet. Otherwise it's ok with a great location in the old town.

This is not a luxury place, but if you'd just like to drink a beer on the top of the hill with a couple of friends, this is the place. Great in the summer (not even sure if open during the winter), with a lot of tables in the open space, on the top of the old city hill.

We stumbled across this place on our first night in Plovdiv--as we were wandering around the old city feeling a bit dazed after a long bus trip from Istanbul. We found it hidden on a hilltop behind some buildings after following the sounds of music and people chatting. It's relatively easy to find since it has a number of different entrances that lead in from different directions around the hill.

It's hard to write a pithy description of the King's Stables (both due to the sprawling nature of this place and also to the fact that it seems to be a restaurant/lounge/nightclub/live music venue all at the same time). The facility itself consists of a series of outdoor patios scattered around the hilltop amidst the trees, and it runs adjacent to some historical ruins along one end.

There's an outdoor stage where there are sometimes live bands playing. Otherwise, there's standard-issue house music in the background (which seems like par for the course in Bulgaria). If you want to carry on a conversation here, there's a section of the patio positioned behind the kitchen and bar where you won't be annihilated by the music. Although it was lively and relatively busy at night, there were still plenty of available tables; it doesn't seem like it would ever be full to capacity.

This place was swarming with super friendly and adorable kittens, and the food was very reasonably priced. We had dinner for two (including drinks) for around 23 BGN (a 500ml bottle of beer was 2.20 BGN). We ended up ordering way too much food because we weren't expecting the portions to be so large. The most memorable dish involved chicken hearts in a mushroom and tomato sauce (the patio kittens wanted to share)!

We ended up visiting this place again later in our trip. When we returned for a midafternoon drink a couple of days later (on a weekend, no less) we had the place virtually to ourselves.

The WC left something to be desired.
