Just off the square in the central pedestrian precint the Gusto has indoor and outdoor seating. It being the end of January, we chose not to sit outside on this occasion. Having been greeeted at the door by a member of staff we walked past the wood-burning pizza oven to our booth by a window with banquettes for four and chairs for another two (though there were just the three of us). The menu was far more eclectic than one might expect, including such exotic offerings as shepherd's pie and caponata.

The resturant was less than half-full at two o'clock on a cold Thursday afternoon. There was a varied clientele, ranging from the six retired gents in the adjacent booth, who looked as if they were there for the duration, to young couples and groups who were hurrying to get back to the office.

For starters we had carpaccio with a garnish of rocket and capers, roasted vegetables and chicken soup. The carpaccio had recently come from somewhere extremely cold but its texture and taste were spot-on once it reached ambient temperature. The chicken soup - about a gallon of it - went down well with the chicken soup aficionado and the roasted veg lived up to expectation.

The main courses were a "small" prosciutto i funghi pizza, spinach cannelloni and goose liver with a fig sauce. The small pizza was amply-sized for one, thin and crispy with genuine fresh mushrooms and a reasonable approximation of prosciutto. Some might have questioned the modest amount of cheese holding up the ham and mushrooms but it tasted fine to me. The piping hot spinach cannelloni were carefully deconstructed by our chicken soup expert before being consumed with apparent enjoyment. The goose liver was cooked to perfection for someone who prefers it being waved over the frying pan without being in contact with the surface for more than a moment. As is so often the case, there was no enquiry about how we wanted the goose liver cooked; in this case, fortunately, it turned out for the best.

The service was top class. Our waiter was attentive without being obtrusive. It was never a problem to attract his attention and he responded intelligently and promptly to our requests. He even humoured our attempts to converse in the local language but slipped into English when it became too difficult for him.

With an indoor no-smoking ban now in force in Bulgaria the Gusto has responded in the time-honoured way with a planet-warming outdoor heater.

The bill for three people, with food as described above plus a beer, two coffees, a coke and a (pretty good) bottle of Chilean pinot noir was 75 leva; roughly £11 or $17 a head at the time of writing. We enjoyed the bill, enjoyed the meal and will certainly eat there again when we are next in Plovdiv.

We had an excellent meal. Incredibly well priced with excellent service. Cheap beer too. Starters, mains and beer for 2 people was 24E. So far the best restaurant in Bulgaria.
