Stop by the city museum or bookstore. They run a video loop explaining the sad history of the beautiful monument. The bridge is the center-point of the town.

The old town is rebuilted now and you can smell and watch the blend of cultures, the cristians and the musslins. Don't miss it.

We visited Mostar in August 2012 from Dubrovnik. We booked a day excursion to Mostar, and although it took well over 4 hours to get there, it was well worth the visit. In fact, I loved it so much I would book to go back to Mostar alone! Our day trip by coach, and a guide included, cost around 30 euro's each. The first sighting on our agenda was the Old Bridge. It is a very busy town so getting on the actual bridge was a bit of a task! If you go with small children, keep them close and keep an eye on your possessions. When you get on the bridge there are loads of people taking pictures etc...and among them you will notice some crazy guy on the edge looking as though he is about to jump off. He will come to the crowd and whoever pays him he will jump off the bridge into the Neretva river below. This is a tradition and has happened for hundreds of years. It can only be done by a few people as it is so dangerous and many people have died attempting it. Once you have paid, you are aloud to watch from the end of the bridge and to take all the best photographs. You can pop into the local book shop/information centre which is at the other end of the bridge. They have a demo playing that shows you the history of the bridge and video footage of it being destroyed during the war, which we found very harrowing. You can buy a copy of this DVD which costs around 10 euros.

All in all, it is a stunning bridge and well worth the visit. It is most useful if you have a guide with you so you can learn the history behind it.
