“old charm in the heart of the old town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

This charming small hotel is barely 2 minutes walk from the entrance to the old town. The rooms are equipped with genuine old furniture giving it a lovely feel. The old town is easily walked in a few minutes and you are in the heart of it here. We had a room overlooking the street but never heard much noise at all. Breakfast was a bit limited but overall a lovely old hotel.

We stayed here on our honeymoon in August this year. Very nice, large and comfortable room with lots of character. Very clean. Perfectly located in heart of old town Kotor. Lovely terrace for breakfast. You do get a bit of noise from musicians playing on the street at night but i doubt you can escape that anywhere in Kotor, it is part of the atmosphere of the place. Would stay again.

We stayed here for our one night in Montenegro during our honeymoon. After driving down to Sveti Stefan from Dubrovnik only to find that it's now closed to the public (oops), we were thoroughly ready to check into our hotel in Kotor and have a drink. We parked outside the old city and easily found the Hotel Villa Duomo on one of the tiny "roads" inside the city walls. As soon as we opened the door to our suite we knew we'd made the perfect choice - every detail was perfect! We loved the beautifully restored stone walls and exposed beams, the light tile floor, and the large windows that allowed in natural light despite the rainy weather we encountered. Though we were on the second floor (just one above the street) and faced the front of the hotel, we were never disturbed by noise. The tiny details in the room really made it stand out in our minds as one of the best we've stayed in. The ancient-looking phone really works, the safe behind the painting on the wall is just plain fun, and the period-piece furniture is exquisite. The bed was super comfortable, and we ordered breakfast to our room the next morning from the friendly staff (though if it weren't raining, we'd have eaten on the GORGEOUS outdoor patio they have set up). With outrageously affordable rates considering the luxury (we paid 135 euros for the night) this is definitely the place to stay in Kotor!!!

To start off, the hotel itself is very nice. The location is in the heart of Old Town Kotor. The rooms have stone walls, antique furniture, and are generally very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. The terrace where breakfast is served is quite nice and the food was not bad at all, which included hot and cold options.

However, our stay was incredibly uncomfortable and I shall explain why. Like the previous reviewer, we also stayed at Villa Duomo during the annual Bokarska festival. We arrived around 8 pm and the streets were already beginning to get crowded. Because there are no cars allowed in Old Town, we dragged our luggage over cobblestone streets through throngs of people (mostly young people getting ready to party) before finally finding Villa Duomo. Once checked in, the staff began profusely apologizing for the noise that we were about to experience. Although I was a little scared, I had no idea what we were in for. Fast forward 30 minutes and the cafe below our room had turned into an all out night club blaring techno music. Our room might as well have been INSIDE the club, that is how loud it was. The music did not stop until past 3 am, and afterwards, there was about another hour of cleanup noise. I suppose if you came to Kotor to experience this festival, then you would not have minded the noise. But we were extremely tired from a day of traveling and just wanted to sleep.

I should say that I believe that any hotel in Old Town would have been equally noisy that night. We walked around and every square was turned into a nightclub and there were DJs on every corner. The one thing I would have appreciated was some sort of notice from the hotel beforehand so that we could have sought alternative lodging or at least mentally prepared ourselves for the night.

I will say that the staff did a good job of being accommodating given the circumstances. Instead of the free breakfast ending at 10 am as it usually does, they extended the hours so we could sleep in. We were also permitted to check out later at 2 pm.

Avoid at best. The architecture and structure itself are beautiful, but so are most others in Kotor. This is where its charm ends. Although the rooms are nicely appointed, the cleanliness is shoddy and there were mould patches in the shower (there's even an in-room sauna which adds to the cheesiness). Villa Duomo is attached to a disco with another club on the backside. The weekend we were there was the annual Bokarska festival. The hotel failed to notify any guests that these discos would be in full swing outdoors until the wee hours. Note that every weekend is quite loud in Kotor especially at the adjacent discos. The breakfast experience was actually creepy with the waitress hovering over us whilst we looked at the menu. Once we made our choice, she hovered over the other guests as well. We decided 10 minutes into this to cancel breakfast and to eat elsewhere in Kotor. At check out, we asked how they could make our experience better. The hotel owner was the most narcissistic and arrogant woman imaginable and decided that insulting us was her best course of action. I have lived in Montenegro for three years and this is one of the worst hotel stays I have had. Truly unfortunate. I highly recommend visiting Kotor as it is a Montenegrin gem, but choose a better hotel like Astoria.

Great location. Expensive but very good. Must have been quiet when we were there, had to unlock the door for us then open it again to let us out. And turn on the wifi when we requested it.

There was a power cut and this was one of the few places to still get power.

Had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel. Excellently located right in the heart of the atmospheric old town and beautifully renovated. We stayed in the attic room (11). The smallest and cheapest room but really cute. Very comfortable bed and quiet (though we were staying off season when i think the local bars are required to turn off their music earlier). Some of the other rooms looked truly amazing. The reception staff were helpful and the breakfast nice.

Only downside is the parking which is 4 minutes walk away, just outside the city walls. There's no parking in the city at all, the hotel parking is as close as you can really get.

There's a beautiful run/walk along the waters edge (turn right outside the city walks).

Overall wholeheartedly recommend!
