Grand Hotel
Ranked #45 of 64 Hotels in Lviv

Built at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire the Grand Hotel has the best location in Lvov (well maybe the Wiener Hotel was better) but hey this is pretty darn central & I would go for the faded empire elegance over arriviste gangster chic anyday. Friendly check-in desk with excellent English & sensible suggestions

Great public areas- a traditional grand staircase (oops mind the loose carpet rods on the stairs) all jazzed up with a funky art exhibition. Long corridors with a red carpet running down the middle of them (very East European) brings you to your room. And although you might have booked a twin you are most likely to find yourself upgraded to a junior suite (because they have more of these than standard rooms). I loved the rooms (the nice air fresheners were appealing) with comfy beds & a comfy settee plus TV in both rooms. My room didn't have much of a view but despite the prime location was quiet

The bar is recommended in some guidebooks but in reality is very small & you would rather go to an outdoor cafe for at lest 6 months of the year. The restaurant is nice & airy though they have net curtains to stop the hoi polloi from staring at the breakfast eaters. I very much liked the breakfast buffet that featured unusual fare (lots of different poppy seed rolls & cakes, cold baked apples with sultanas & nice cold crepes. I thought the staff put out too little food at once so they constantly seemed to be back & forth topping up & you might find a favourite flavour of yogurt might go out of stock at the key moment of selection. Not up to the Hotel Bristol in Warsaw (no champagne or vodka for breakfast) but not bad never the less

Overall though a superb city break hotel in a superb city break location. From touchdown at the airport to the hotel, through check-in & into Svovody Prospekt to sip beer in just 50 minutes. Splendid.

It seems that the Grand Hotel has seen better days. The hotel itself is lovely: beautiful lobby stairway, attractive restaurant, cozy bar, great renov bathrooms... but the level of service has suffered some with new owners. We found only one of the clerks at the reception desk trying to be helpful. The others, though fluent English speakers, didn't seem interested or able to answer many of our routine questions. When asked to recommend a restaurant they said that the hotel had a restaurant. Hmmmnnn. The maid service was very good and when we said our tv wasn't working they sent someone up right away. (We had inadvertently unplugged it)
The buffet breakfast included in room rate was one of the best we experienced in Ukraine. Restaurant is attractive, with lots of windows looking out on to busy sidewalk. Food was plentiful and varied. There is a cozy bar that serves a decent bar menu located just off lobby.
The location is perfect if you want to be in the middle of the action in L'viv.
Two of the bathrooms we saw had nice big bathtubs and adjustable showerheads with great hot water and water pressure. Hairdryer provided but there was a charge for the bath products in bathroom. We thought that was a bit chintzy.
The wireless internet worked fine in the lobby and the lobby bar, but signal was usually too weak to use in our room. There is no mini-bar or fridge in room.
All in all, it's probably still one of the best hotels in L'viv but might not be worth the price compared to others. We paid about $115 for a spacious room for two with twin beds.

Excellent location and the desk staff spoke Engligh and were friendly! Both these two last points are rare on their own among Ukraine Hotel staff, but in combination its a small miracle. Like most Hotels in Ukraine, a bit pricey for what you get (although feels like a bargain if you're coming from Kiev). Rooms are nice though and actually have some character, breakfast was decent and again those desk staff are worth their weight in gold (helped us figure out a bus out of town and even moved our hotel reservation up a couple of nights for us). If I'm back in Lviv, I'd stay at the Grand again.

I doubt if many people ever pay the huge rack rates, we certainly didn't, its an upmarket place for Ukraine, remember the country was a nightmare until recently, in the early 90s we had no heat and broken windows where snow came in, now you can enjoy the Grand , breakfast on the terrace , enjoy a pint at the Dublin pub out the back, wander the streets in relative safety, admire the restored buildings, the friendly people.Room ok, facilities ok, reception very efficient and helpful, everyone polite. Clean, bright and efficient premises if you get a sensible price.

I was a little uneducated what to expect from the Grand. This was my first trip to the Ukraine and both my Brothers as welI. I have a lot of experience in the hotel industry and I was rather impressed with the overall flow of the hotel, and the complimentary breakfast. I thought the room was small but very Quaint. The location was superb and overall it was a real comfortable treat. I would not have stayed anywere else. I left a clothing item in my room that I,m trying to retrieve, and surprised that they have not contacted me re this. Make sure you don't accidentally misplace a towel because they will embarrass you upon check out! Murray Shyba Calgary Canada

i stayed here for 2 nights in a suite and was very impressed.i was here on business and the company i was visiting booked me here and i was a little worried after reading other reviews.i have to be honest and say that my room was excellent .it was very clean and yes a little dated but this is a period hotel . i ate both evenings in the restaurant and the food also was excellent.the only reql downfall with this hotel was the breakfast which was not nice at all........very small stale selection.the location was also very good right in the centre of the city which i have to say was beautiful indeed

Only in the bizarre planet that is Ukraine currently is the Grand Hotel is a 4 star hotel.

Taken objectively, compared to any other hotel in Europe, this would be at best a 3 star hotel that might actually be only a 2 star hotel on its worse days. 4 star hotels are things like the Savoy in London, with attendants everywhere, tasteful and innovative restaurants, discreet service, superb rooms, and so forth. The Ritz Carleton anywhere is a 4 star hotel. The Park hotel most places is a 4 star hotel. To even consider this hotel in the same UNIVERSE as those hotels is laughable and indicative of the Kafkaesque situation in Ukraine today. That the Grand Lviv actually is MORE EXPENSIVE than some of these takes us fully through the looking glass.

The Hotel Grand has exactly one thing going for it: location. It is indeed very centrally located in Lviv. Everything else is mediocre.

The lobby bar, with its obligatory pair of local prostitutes, is a shabby, unfriendly, smoke filled nothing of a place. The lobby itself is unspectacular. The service is indifferent by western standards (though, sadly, still "above average" by Ukraine standards). The rooms are nothing special at all. Amenities? What amenities? If i recall, they don't even give you a proper newspaper.

In December 2007, the average salary in Lviv is probably still around $500 per month. If we consider that in a major world capital, such as Rome or Paris for example a hotel of the quality of the Grand would cost MAYBE 120 per night, In a seconday city like Marseille or Trevisi this woul be a 60 euro a night hotel, if even that.

if we discount the fact that Lviv, while charming, is hardly Rome or Paris and the average worker works for much less, this hotel really should not cost more than 40 Euro per night. Every penny yyou spend above this per night consider it how badly you are being stolen from in this otherwise very medicore hotel.

Grand? Hardly. Good? I guess. For the price? An absolute ripoff.
