Stopped at the Donat for this our first trip to Zadar (third to Croatia). The hotel is basic but good value for money. If you are looking for luxury, you need to look elsewhere.
The hotel is situated in pleasant, partially wooded grounds 50 meters from the shore, within the Borek holiday peninsula. It is a 15 minute bus ride (10 kuna) from Zadar old town. We found the local buses clean and efficient but care is needed if returning when dark as it is really difficult to see where you are as street lighting is poor. One night, we ended up in the wrong place (wrong bus!).
If you are spending several days in Zadar my top sightseeing tips are:
1) if you have the energy, climb the cathdral tower for excellent views;
2) Take a ferry across to one of the neighbouring islands: much better value than the excursion boats and a much better vantage point;
3) Do take in a visit to Plitvice National Park: it's stunning
We found the staff helpful and courteous. As seems to be the Croatian way, if you want something you need to ask and your request will be responded to promptly and efficiently. One sour note: the evening before we left, we ordered a taxi for the airport for the following morning at reception. Having booked the taxi, we went off to bed. At the appointed time next day, no taxi: an anxious 35 minute wait to get another cab. Fortunately, we allowed ourselves plenty of time but things could have been very different. Double check the taxi firm you are booked with!
Rooms are comfortable enough, if on the small side but the balconies (smallish) help compensate. Furnishings are basic but adequate and there were clothes hangers in the ward robe. Sadly, no sink plug for the hand basin (but a wad of loo paper does the trick).
Food was nothing to write home about: again adequate, although we did have some superb squid and the fish generally was good. If you are a coffee fan, take your own! The stuff served in the restaurant is not nice. The Franck Black India Tea is, however, very good even when made with well off-the-boil water (surprisingly, the tea bag instructions say use 90 degree C water - shocking discovery for a Brit).
While we were at the Donat, they had a wedding reception in the restaurant and we were all sent off to the Faulkensteiner Funimation down the road. The food there was really good but then you generally get what you pay for and I suspect that the Funimation was somewhat more expensive than the deal we got on the Donat.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Donat and would be happy enough to return there. A good value place to stay.
