A gate with Venetian influence, Zadar was once the largest walled city in the Venice hegemony. If you walk in one entrance, it means you are bringing the city good tidings, if you walk through another, then your intent is not good. It leads to the center of the city where a university and shops are built.
The masonry is solid and the sculptures in the gate are well detailed.

Yeah, looks lovely from a distance but there's nothing else really when you go through except people trying to push tours and tourist shops and restaurants, bars, a market etc etc. The old buildings are interesting to see but overall the atmosphere has an underlying coldness and resentment of anyone other than white, Anglo-Saxon and heterosexual. Street food is worth trying however.

Photographers and architectural historians...a Venetian lion rampant? I regret not having read up more in advance.

On my list of "Things to See While in Zadar" but other then its age, its nothing to write home about. It is kind of dirty as it is used as an exit way from the city. If you blink, you may miss it and the gate from the inside is not impressive. The view from the outer wall is better but it is unfortunately behind you as you drive through the thin opening. If you can walk through it, take a picture, then head some place else, you will have seen everything this gate has to offer.

We went to Croatia for the second time and were amazed with the beauty of this country. We stayed in a lovely and small place near Zadar( Bibinje )where time travels very slow and its a good base fo travelling to nature reserves- Vransko Jezero (Pag),or Paklenica National park. Most of the places are free and easy to access. Its a real treat for nature lovers.
