“Hidden Paradise”
Reviewed March 19, 2015 for a stay in June 2014

My husband and I are retired tour operators i.e. travel professionals on the lookout for places and areas which have not lost their soul. In Lucivana and its position we found what we were looking for.: a small hidden hamlet surrounded b hills covered in wildflowers and herbs. A circle of Cyprus trees crowning the hills overlooks the villa.
The villa and pool and grounds is steeped in tradition and historic vibes.
To make it acceptable to spoilt travellers it has all necessary mod-coms for a happy stay.
Everything inside and out was planned with a lot of taste and care to satisfy a group of
friends or a large family. Winter and summer kitchen, barbeque, sundecks and who
does not want the sun there is shade from old trees. Perfect!

“Havenely peace”
Reviewed February 26, 2015 for a stay in July 2014

We were planning a holiday in the vicinities of Dubrovnik, somewhere away from the noise and the crowds and yet close enough to Dubrovnik, so we could go there for the day or an evening. Our English friends recommended Villa Lucivana to us, and in fact this property has offered us all that we were looking for. We needed a peaceful place in which to relax on our own, but it had to be in an area where there would be enough things to do when our grown up family members join us. At first we enjoyed getting acquainted with this 200 years' old stone house and its outbuildings set in the lush Mediterranean landscape. The architecture is typical of this part of Dalmatia, with living quarters on the upper floors and thick walls which keep the house cool in the summer. Our young hosts, Andrea and Antun, took great care to show us each of the many separate corners of this property. They also gave us a lesson in all there is to know and do in the Konavle area (south-east of Dubrovnik): what to see, where to shop and what to buy.
The house was rebuilt in 2005; in 2013 the swimming pool was added, and a cottage attached to the main house was completely refurbished. Regardless of the recent reconstructions, the house and the cottage have kept their authentic atmosphere. The house has been tastefully decorated, it is very cozy and comfortable, by no means lavish in style, as that would be quite inappropriate for a house like this one, stuck in the middle of a sleepy village. While we were alone, we have used the cottage as our ground floor living room, but when our family arrived, our son-in law chose the cottage to work there and found it conducive to his writing.

Everybody enjoyed the privacy of the open air spaces and the multitude of corners in which to lounge and chat, sip a drink or read a book. We were surprised to find two fully equipped kitchens at our disposal, one on the first floor and another at garden level, and thanks to the existence of an extra room on the ground floor, we were able to have our house helper with us.

The village of Popovici is made of several groups of 3-4 houses, scattered in the dip between the hills and the top of the cliffs which plunge into the Adriatic sea. There are no shops, nor bars in the village, therefore a car is indispensable, not only for food shopping, but also for sampling what this countryside has to offer. We rented a car at the airport, and our family rented a second car. One day when we couldn't agree on the choice of program for the day, the gardener's son provided us with an extra car from his office at the airport.

We have visited several spectacular wild beaches in this area, one pebble, others what you could call -friendly rock. There are no refreshments nor facilities on these beaches, so take a bottle of water with you if you go there. The experience of the virgin contact with the sea is memorable.
We have spent one day in the Bays of Kotor in Montenegro, well worth a trip. We have visited the vineries in the Konavle valley, attended a very colourful traditional folklore performance in a village close by (Sunday mornings only). We went regularly to nearby Cavtat, for drinks and shopping and especially for a taste of a fine fish meal: I recommend "Leut", quite expensive but worth it. "Kolona" is also good, and more reasonable. Another place I recommend is "Monković" in Ljuta. Please go there, and if you do so in the evening, do not forget a sweater, for it gets so fresh on a platform over a stream.

Do take a boat shuttle from Cavtat directly to the old harbour in Dubrovnik. Apart from sightseeing, enjoy a drink in one of the many picturesque places inside and outside the town walls. Whichever place you choose, you can count on a delightful view. Have oysters on the market square where you can also by fresh fruit and vegetables.

To go to Dubrovnik in the evening to a concert or a performance you have to take the car, but parking is never easy. You can take a taxi, but be sure to agree on the price beforehand. When you return to your house in the countryside, you will greatly appreciate the difference in temperature.
I personally greatly look forward to another stay at Lucivana.

“Unforgetable”
Reviewed February 21, 2015 for a stay in September 2014

My wife and I were looking for a large house for renting in Dubrovnik vicinities to invite my business friends/partners from Austria and Germany in September 2014. We wanted swimming pool and barbecue as first condition, stone house with authentic atmosphere, second condition. I contacted a local real estate agency because one of my friends would like to see property on sale and these people helped me find this house. First plus – only 5 kms from Dubrovnik airport, so we rented two cars and unpacked our luggage one hour after landing. Parking for cars inside iron gate, feels safe. Down the path to stone wall and second large wooden gate we enter green courtyard with everything that we wanted. Feels very private. Our host prepared pretty table on the terrace for our brunch first day and left fridge full with food and drinks, so we can enjoy our stay immediately before going shopping. Later we found excellent meat in Pemo food store near airport and bought fresh vegetables from the gardener for our barbecues. Our friends, three couples, slept in the main house and we slept in side cottage (very comfortable, like a suite). While our guests sleep on first and second floor, we prepare breakfast in the garden very easily thanking to comfort of having second kitchen on the ground floor. This house has great atmosphere because the same family are owners for two centuries. We drove often to Cavtat where there are lots of good fish restaurants. Like in Cote d’Azur you see many enormous yachts and sail boats. Our friends liked this area very much, because it is like Provence, close to sea, protected by mountains. We visited Dubrovnik once during the day (very crowded) and in the evening (fantastic). The old town and the whole area offers good life, fine weather, fascinating history and many cultural events.

“Great for families, especially if mixed, because children and elders can each enjoy their own spaces”
Reviewed February 17, 2015 for a stay in August 2014

We have discovered this property three years ago when we were visiting southern Croatia, while looking for a beach in the village of Popovici in the Konavle area outside Dubrovnik. Last summer we have managed to book our holiday there for ten days. With my three children aged 2.5, 5 and 12 we stayed in the main house (first and second floor) and my parents slept in the so-called garden house. It was great that the children and the elders were separated. The elders got up first and enjoyed their swim in the pool before breakfast. This property has two full kitchens. There is one on the first floor in the main building, which we have used only to prepare afternoon drinks. There is a second kitchen at the garden level, very useful for preparing meals to be eaten outdoors. We enjoyed this house very much because it has so many different places in which everyone can stay alone. We chose between the pool terrace and the dining terrace under the vine where we had meals, upper terrace for afternoon drinks, a separate shaded terrace in the courtyard, a wooden platform in the garden under the oak trees and the sun deck. While my parents enjoyed their evening walks through the countryside, the children loved their afternoon trips to the beach, and also horse riding. We discovered two good restaurants in the area, both located on the banks of a stream, nice and cool in the summer heat. We met the house manager only on arrival and departure. The house was cleaned and beds and towels changed after five days. I recommend it highly, especially for a mixed company.
