What's nice is that the hotel is more modern and clean than other options. What's not as nice is that the price is increasing every month. What used to be a good value is now just a bit more than you should pay for a place that doesn't have a pool, views, proximity to Old Town, and is removed from the coastline. The service was nice, but they wanted to double the price for adding a third person to the room even though there was a pull-out bed available. The breakfast was excellent.

Overall a great option, but it's starting to cost more than it should.

Admittedly this hotel is a little out of town and you do really need to take a bus into the old town but this is the only downside - and not a major one when you get to grips with the local bus service which is regular and relatively cheap.

The staff were lovely - seemed to know all their guests and had our key ready to hand us as we walked back through the door in the evening. A first for us! We had also emailed in advance asking for a twin room which unfortunately wasn't available - but half way through our stay one of the girls approached us and asked if it was us who had emailed them and offered us a room change as one was now available.

The rooms were of a high standard and the well equipped kitchenette and fridge, and the complimentary tea and coffee a bonus. I can honestly find nothing negative to say about the hotel other than the location may not suit those who like the convenience of everything on their doorstep - oh yes and breakfast service ends at 9:30 which was a little early for us late sleepers!

I rented the 1-bdr suite with a sea view.
.
Pro: Room looks true to online pictures, near the bus stop.

Con:
Walk from bus stop to hotel is very scary if youre alone at night (must walk up long, dark, deserted street under construction).

Not close to town (lol try walking to town at 10am in August!),

Not very clean (greasy fingerprints all over table/chairs/windows, kitchen & bathroom counter not wiped off, soap things not filled).

Not friendly: The lady sent me a confirmation email with the bill for 220 euro, so I showed up with euro. Then she laughs at me and says she only accepts kuna. So I walk by the exchange booths and eventually find that the local bank has the best exchange rate (Zagreb Bank - no commission either). I go exchange the euros for the kuna (stood in line for 30 mins), and she complains about the rate I got. So I asked her if shed like to charge my Visa instead. She accepted the kuna rate after that.

DubrovnikKatarina, Manager at Berkeley Hotel & Day Spa, responded to this reviewResponded August 26, 2008

At the Berkeley Hotel we pride ourselves on the great reviews we have received from guests who have stayed in our hotel as well as welcome constructive criticism as we are always seeking to make our hotel even more enjoyable for guests.

Upon arrival to the hotel, should guests feel the room/apartment does not meet their expectations in any way, guests should immediately let our reception staff or manager know rather than posting complaints once leaving the hotel.

At reception, all hotel prices are clearly indicated with a clear notice that we accept all forms of credit cards and cash (only kuna). Upon hearing of the problem that arose over 17kuna I requested for the receptionist to disregard the difference. This was done immediately.

Our location is in Gruz harbour, there is a bus stop directly across from the hotel and another (more frequent bus service) down the street (less than 5 min walk). The street that leads to the bus stop is used by all locals in the neighbourhood as well as young children, making it hard to believe someone would feel threatened or scared walking on such a street.
