“Great stay in Dubrovnik”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2008

My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon in Croatia. When we arrived on a ferry from Italy we had no reservations, Ivo and his wife were at the port and asked us if we needed a place to stay. It was a little more expensive than we were looking for, but since it was inside the city walls we thought we would give it a shot.

Ivo drove us to the old city and took us to his aunt's home where we would be renting a flat within her house with full kitchen, living room with a TV, bedroom and private bath with AC in the bedoroom. It was in a perfect location right in the middle of the city. After showing us the flat, we had coffee and a very nice visit with Ivo, his wife and his aunt (well, his aunt speaks no english, but Ivo translated for us). Ivo took us on a tour of the town, suggested places to eat and tours to take and even showed us where to find a cheap internet cafe.

We ran into Ivo a couple times around town during our stay and he always had new suggestions for us and told us to call him if we needed anything. He and his aunt were very hospitable and accommodating. We even made a few of our own meals in the kitchen to save money. We enjoyed the town so much that we extended our stay an extra night. It was worth every penny. Thanks Ivo!

We stayed at Rooms Ivo in July 2008. We contacted him about a week before arriving and he said he had an airconditioned room with a private washroom for 60 Euros. We wrote back and said we'd take it and gave him our arrival details. He was waiting for us when our bus arrived (nice touch), but instead of going to his apartments, he told us there would be a change because he's now full and we were then shuffled over to his Aunt's place. There was NO air conditioning (he pointed to the fan) and a SHARED washroom. We asked him to reduce the price, and he agreed on 50 Euros. However, the next morning he told us that since we were staying with his Aunt, he didn't have control over what the room charge was. His Aunt would NOT budge on the price - we ended up having to pay 60 Euros anyways.
I have read other traveller reviews on this site and it seems as though we're not the first ones to experience this. Ivo does NOT hold true to his reservations and will book other travellers if he finds a better deal. Fortunately he will still meet you when you arrive, but don't expect that you'll get what you discussed beforehand - and still pay the same price.
His Aunt only spoke Croatian. Little did they know that my boyfriend is fluent in Croatian and they were speaking in front of us thinking that we only spoke English. His Aunt said to Ivo that the room we were staying in was HER room and she wanted him to tell us that. But Ivo refused to. Her clothes were in the closet and she changed the bedding right in front of us. Obviously we were kicking her out of her room for the night - no wonder why she wouldn't budge on the price.
Thankfully we were only there for 1 night, so we didn't put up a fuss. We were going home the next day and wanted to spend a nice evening in Dubrovnik. The location is good - not right inside the old town, but a short walk.
If you want hassle-free accomodations where you know what you're getting - DON'T stay with Ivo. There are many other good accomodations to choose from.

We stayed with Ivo twice in June 2008. The first time we stayed in a room in his aunt's house, the second time a room in his family's house. Both are exceptionally located in the closest street outside the old city walls. There are two entrances into the old city less than 100m from the houses.
The room at the aunt's house is a room with a queen bed, wardrobe, table and balcony. The bathroom is shared with the aunt. The aunt speaks almost no English but is very kind. Everything was very clean, sheets and linen provided. There is also a washing machine and clothes line. We paid 300 kuna (about AUD$70 a night).
We left Dubrovnik for a few days, then returned, and the second time stayed in a room in Ivo's family's house. The room had a private bathroom and a balcony and we paid 350 kuna a night (aboud AUD$75).
The best thing about both places was the location.
Ivo and his family were friendly and considerate; although initially I found it strange staying in someone else's house, we didn't see much of them other than when we were coming/going.
Ivo told us that prices increase considerably in July and August (approximately double what we paid) but presumably they go up everywhere.
Both locations had noise from the carparks below, but this may have been worse than usual when we were there because of the UEFA cup celebrations (Croatia kept winning matches).
Neither place is 5 star accommodation, but they were comfortable, clean, cheap and excellently located. We would stay at either one again.

Ivo and family picked us up from the bus station, carefully lettered sign in hand. He was so proud of that sign. His affable nature and enthusiasm were the themes of our stay there.

As others have noted before, you stay in his house, with his family, and Boobie, the family Pekingese-ish dog, which gives you an insight into everyday Croatian culture (coffee, the olive oil everyone seems to make themselves, and even the subtitled Magnum PI reruns on at 1pm every day).

We stayed in the double room without ensuite, but never had to wait for the loo (which was spotless and cleaned every morning). The rooms themselves were quite spacious, and the beds were huge and comfy. A guest fridge in the hallway held our drinks and giant-pizza leftovers from Mea Culpa (highly recommended, but one pizza is definitely enough for 2 people).

Aside from the warm welcome and excellent company, the highlight is the location: right outside the city walls, 3 minutes walk from two city gates into the old town.

One caveat: it's located right off of a parking lot, with a motorcycle shop at ground level. When we travelled off-season, things were pretty sedate, but in summer, with more activity, noise could be an issue. Bring earplugs for peace of mind.

We also had dinner with them one night: a delicious home-cooked shrimp risotto. And to help things along, Vesna actually picked up our bus tickets for us, since the station is a ways from where we were. So kind and obliging! If you are reading this, Ivo and Vesna, hvala!

All in all, a wonderful option: genial hosts, clean rooms, the experience of living with a family, and location, location, location.

I recently stayed at Ivo's Rooms in Dubrovnik for 4 nights. Ivo and his family are friendly and open to their guests. The location is excellent, but very quiet. The room and bathrooms are clean, no complaint. I think it is one of the best places if you want to see how Croatians live and talk to them. Ivo welcomes those who book in advance and anyone doing so is encouraged to reconfirm a few days before if possible. It's not a 5 star hotel and it works better in that way for both you and Ivo.

No recommended...

We recently stayed here for two non-consecutive nights. The location was just outside the city walls to old Dubrovnik. Ivo picked us us from the airport for about the same rate as a taxi would charge.

If you email/call Ivo months/weeks/etc. in advance he doesn't actually hold a room for you. The first night we were staying there we called him the day before and asked him to pick us up from the airport. I got the impression that this was the only reason there was a room waiting for us. (Note: We had reconfirmed our reservations more than once via email). We told him we would be back in two days as originally reserved (we went to the island of Mljet - it's lovely - you should go and stay at Soline6/Eco-Apartments [--]) and he said to call him again to re-re-reconfirm (yes, this would be the 3rd possibly 4th confirmation). We told him we wouldn't be able to call but to please hold the room for us - he insisted we call anyway. Then when we did call he didn't answer.

Anyway he had agreed to pick us up from the ferry dock and thankfully he did. However once he picked us up he told us he didn't have any rooms available and that we would be staying at his aunt's place nearby. The other place was nearby so we didn't really mind so we went to the new location. Then his aunt wasn't home - and he didn't have the key... nso we sat and waited - backpacks and all. But then she happend to show up and gave him the key. He opened the room and a young british woman screamed with surprise inside. Yup - the room had already been rented out to someone else. We sat in the kitchen and we heard him ask when she had checked in and when she was leaving. She told him she had checked in two nights ago and had agreed to stay for 3 nights... he then came to us and said that she was overstaying her original reservation because "everybody always stays longer" but not to worry (she obviously was NOT over-staying!). So we sat around as he made phone calls around town and finally took us to a third location run by this older woman who obviously had her own rooms for rent and after we got our room we could hear them arguing (we think) probably about how much money they would each get. Anyway this woman was very sweet but didn't really speak English.

So in conclusion everything was okay in the end - but Ivo definitely does not honor reservations. In addition I think when people reserve for "3 nights" I think he's confused and might think that means 3 days/2 nights... I can't really figure it out because the whole time we were staying with him he kept talkign about how everyone loves him and always stays extra long so he doesn't have rooms available,,,

I wish I had someplace else in Dubrovnik to refer people to because if I went back I definitely would NOT stay here! Also if you have strong feelings about personal hygiene then he may not be the man for you...

Ivo and his wife met us at the bus station, and made us feel very welcome. We were given the room without the balcony and ensuite bathroom at first, which wasn't a big problem but we had booked months in advance for the room with an ensuite bathroom and balcony. Ivo was very apologetic and we got the room we'd originally booked the next day.

You are basically staying in this family’s house so it's a bit strange at first, but we got used to the sounds of the kids and the dog around the house. The room was clean and for the price we can't complain. Towards the end of our stay we did think it was a little bit rude but he wanted to show someone round our room while we were still in it! We saw the funny side though.

One thing we weren't so sure about was the tour we did with Ivo. We asked Ivo if he could take us on a tour but we were too late to book so he kindly offered to take us to Split (as he happened to be going there that day with his family). We spent 4 hours in Split and on the way back he said he'd charge us £80 (800 kuna) rather than £140 (1400 kuna) which is what he'd normally charge since he was already going there - we thought it was a bit steep but maybe we're just cheapskates!

All in all we had a fantastic time in Dubrovnik, the location is ideal and the hosts were very friendly; I just don’t think this kind of accommodation would appeal to everyone – if you need your privacy, peace and quiet I wouldn’t choose to stay here but if you’re looking for a cheap place to stay that’s close to everything, this is where you should stay.
