This was our first visit to Croatia so didnt really know what to expect. Our first impressions of the Uvala were of a modern hotel and spotlessly clean. We requested a quiet room and we were provided with one at the rear of the hotel on the 4th floor which came with all the amenities one would expect from a 4 star hotel. The staff were very friendly and the housekeeping faultless.

The only downside was the fact that the room was extremely hot and despite having the air conditioning running flat out all day it was totally inadequate and very noisy, turn it off and open the windows and you were no better off as the room soon became unbearably hot and you could hear the noise from the kitchen 3 floors below, the result was a week of broken sleeping patterns. We were told by several people that this one of the cooler months so would dread to go in July/August when it really warms up.

The staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you however the menu is a little repetitive and the desserts are quite basic. The bar staff seemed to have difficulty making cocktails.

The Lapad Bay area is very picturesque but there isnt a lot going on, if you want to get away from it all for a week fine, whilst there are a few bars and restaurants thats about it not even any shops of note apart from selling the usual touristy tat . Also there is no sandy beach just a couple of stretches of pebbles where you can rent a sun bed and umbrella.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view room

This is the third time we have stayed at the Uvala. I first chose it as it is a relatively small hotel (51 rooms) and I don't like 200+ room hotels. Each time we have been we have found the staff (reception, restaurant and housekeeping) to be welcoming, friendly and helpful. We have always had a room on the top floor - we chose to pay a supplement for a room at the front of the hotel and feel that this is worth it - the view across Lapad Bay is lovely, and we have never found noise to be a problem - but we have always been there either at the beginning or end of the season when the resort is quieter. The hotel has always been spotlessly clean and our room has always been cleaned before 10 am. The restaurant is buffet service and although the selection is not huge we found it fine - a choice of two soups, several salad items and a reasonably large selection of mains. The waiting staff were always prompt at clearing the tables and bringing out more items for the buffet, and if there was anything else we wanted we always felt we could have asked. I wouldn't describe the food as outstanding, but for a hotel of this size I wouldn't expect anymore that we got. If buffet-style dining is not your thing, then book B+B and eat out in one of the local restaurants - there are plenty to choose from in Lapad Bay and a bit further afield in the Old Town. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel and the trip to the Old Town takes 10-15 minutes for 8 Kuna if you buy tickets at the hotel reception. I can't offer an opinion on the pools - they always felt too cold so we never took the plunge! Definite plus points for this hotel - staff and location!

I have been there on Sept. 2010. The Hotel is a 3 start hotel, never a 4 start hotel.

When we just arrived we didn't have towels in our room, I asked the receptcion, I went to the 'concret' beach that is in front of the hotel, came back to my room and still we didn't have the towels. She said that she was alone and couldn't leave the reception.

They had to change our bed because the first night we couldn't sleep of the noises that the bed was making. At least that was quick, and it worked out.

The hotel has their own PC, but you have to pay for it. I have been in several hotels and now a days you don't have to pay anymore for 30 min. of internet!! Please!!! that happens just in a hostel, no in a "4 star hotel"

We had just breaksfasts there. The breaksfast was OK., ALTOUGH if you want a fresh orange juice you have to pay AS WELL!!!! and if you arrive at 9.45am the menu will be really poor.

For a 3 start hotel is fine, but when you pay a 4 start hotel you receive something much much better.

About the location, if have to go again to Dubrovnik I would go to the Old town, I know..it's more expensive..but you don't have anything in the Lapad area..we went to the Old town twice a day..that was a waste of time and money.

Good luck!

Mariana.

We stayed for a week on a Thomson package.
First impressions were excellent. Loved the quirky reception area - tiny shoes set under glass in the floor. We had booked a sea view room, and it didn't disappoint. Views across the bay and out to the islands. Fascinating watching all the liners passing.
Room was large with lots of hanging space for a holiday hotel. Bathroom was clean and had bath with shower over. The balcony was big. with table and chairs and a useful clothes airer. Only minuses were smokers on both adjoining balconies made it a bit fumey at times. (rooms were non-smoking) and the balconies faced north, so never really in the sun.
The restaurant was a bit souless and could be improved by more mellow lighting at night. There was a good choice, although after 7 dinners it was beginning to feel a bit repetative. There was always a new salad choice or soup, followed by meat, fish, vegetables, potatoes, rice, pasta etc. Unusual breakfast choices - stuffed peppers and cheesey aubergines sometimes. The bread at breakfast was delicious. Staff were helpful and wine reasonable.
I used the pools. The indoor one was OK, but the outdoor one was freezing. There weren't quite enough sunbeds in the somewhat limited sunny area by the pool.
Location was good, with buses to the Old Town right outside. We were the second stop so always got a seat, but it was a bit of a melee coming back.
Recommend:-
Trip to Mostar - what a contrast to Croatia. Crowded and noisy but fascinating
Lokrum - easy boat trip and lovely walks
Cavtat - went by small boat - the sea had looked calm, but the boats are small so it was very rough, with waves soaking some of the passengers. Cavtat was a beautiful little place.

Having just returned from a week at the Uvala, and having read some orf the other reviews, I think there are some truths that need to be said about the Lapad area and the city of Dubrovnik. Certainly there is nothing wrong with the hotel Uvala, it is comfortable, and clean with friendly staff and excellent buffet breakfasts but the area of Lapad leaves much to be desired. The so called beach consists of two small stretches of pebbles separated by areas of concrete. We found the place to be incredibly over crowded, noisy, dirty, simply a fairly awful experience. Certainly in the surrounding area there are plenty of restaurants but they all serve a standard tourist fare, plain and uninspiring, over priced and over cooked.
The buses to Dubrovnik old town are frequent but they are also very over crowded. The locals do not have any culture of queueing and you will often end up standing. The old town itself is certainly beautiful but the tourist hordes spoil the experience. At times in the narrow streets it was almost impossible to move and we saw long queues to walk around the walls, an experience which has to be paid for. Although we some had some decent food, Sesame and Mea Culpa are recommended, most of the meals were poor value for money. It is easily possible to pay £70 for two courses with wine for the sort of food that that you would send back to the kitchen if served at home. I suppose it comes from being so long a tourist magnet but there was an air of being constantly fleeced in Dubrovnik, starting with the journey from the airport which cost £ 35 for a 25 minute ride. A boat trip to a 'sandy beach' was similarly disappointing. We were taken to two small islands first, then served an over cooked fish picnic and then to Lopod, where we had 2 hours. We were not told that the sandy beach was a 20 minute walk over the hill to the other side of the island, a journey that virtually nobody on the trip bothered with.
Certainly Dubrovnik is an amazing place but there is nothing there of particular visitor merit other than the place itself. I would recommend combining a visit with somewhere else, and I would give the Lapad bay area a very wide berth indeed!
