“Beautiful historic town”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

The rain on arrival wasn't what we expecting but it only lasted an hour ( there are plenty of umbrellas for sale in the shops if you get caught out ). The old pharmacy is worth a look, as are the other public buildings within the city although there is a small fee for each. The best way to get round is to wander through the streets off the main thoroughfare and nip into the little shops that abound them. The prices are good and the staff friendly too. The cafes are good value for lunch and drinks cheap too. Didn't get onto the city walls as they were heaving with people and we ran out of time too ( fyi the charge is 100 Kuna for the walls walk ).Will return but not in July or August , far too busy.

“cobbled streets”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

The area is like a grid. The main Street- Stradun is fairly wide but parallel and criss crossing streets are more like alleys and most have street restaurants a long the sides.
Very busy so can get a bit crowded.

“Dubrovnik, 20 year after liberation”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Dubrovnik old town is very impressive when approached from the sea, so try and arrive by water if you can. You enter the city gates and arrive in a large square with the main street leading onward. On one side there are narrow, steep alleys where people live and on the other where the streets are slightly wider, restaurants spill out onto the cobbles. The must-do is to walk the city walls, (which requires purchase of a ticket), giving spectacular views. There are are one or two cafes along the way if you start to fade. Look out for the roofs which were mostly replaced due to damage during the siegeat the large well below. Dubrovnik can be 'done' in a day but if you have longer, take the cable car up to the top of the mountain for a panoramic view.

“Stunning, wear mosquito repellant in summer”
Reviewed August 10, 2014 via mobile

The old town is a charming medieval jewel, in spite of the crowds.
Wonderful just to wander around and explore.
Early morning and evening are best to avoid the thousands of cruise ship tourists passing through late morning.
If it's very hot and crowded, the smaller streets offer shade and less hustle and bustle than the main thoroughfare.
We felt safe and people were very helpful.
Be aware of another annoying visitor: the mosquito.
If you're prone to bites, do wear repellant. The Croatian mossies appear to be pretty aggressive, biting even during the day and expert at finding any exposed areas. At night they lurk beneath the restaurant tables.

“A three day stay”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Our hotel in Dubrovnik was situated right in the middle of Old Town. Once you're there you never really need to leave!

Early morning: The city is empty! The only people awake and moving are the shop keepers and delivery drivers setting up. It was great to wake up and wander the streets before the hoards of tours take over. I would recommend checking out the small farmers market that they set up in the middle of Old town, grab something light to eat, and then take some pictures while you can.

10- 4: Very crowded and busy. Huge tour groups (mainly from the cruise ships I think) fill up the city.

Evenings: So much fun! Though still pretty crowded, this is when the city is really alive. The shops are all open, there is live music at many of the restaurants, and you can wander for hours.

Things to note about old town... EVERYTHING is overpriced. This is not the place to stay for long if you're on a tight budget. Also, if you're planning on staying like we did, make sure you get rid of your rental car. Parking is impossible to find and the one garage charges over $100/day.
