This is the main entrance point into the city and when the cruise ships are in town an absolute nightmare to get through. A small tip, if you go down the steps to the LHS of the gate and go through the kids playground on the left, just on te right hand side there is a small hole in the wall that lets you bypass the madness.

Well worth giving a look!

“Surprisingly Nice!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

Dubrovnik in general was a pleasant surprise! Clean, safe, pleasant people, so much history. We enjoyed walking the streets of the walled city, wandering in and out of shops, and visiting the Church of St. Blaise. We had thought that Dubrovnik would be a "nothing" stop on our Mediterranean cruise compared to marquee stops like Athens and Rome but it turned out to be a favorite.

“unless you have to use this one, find another entrance”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

Jammed with tourists. Very hard to navigate. If you do end up in this area, though, be sure to go down the stairs to the old moat, where there is now a play ground -- and a pathway that leads to the ocean! If you go through the playground, there is a semi-secret entrance to Old town that avoids the worst of the crowds, behind the playground to the left, with a low head clearance.

“Genius”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

An intriguing insight to the history of the place especially with there patron St Blaise above the entrance. As it is one of the main gateways into the city it is also very busy, there seems to be a hive of activity with people moving through the gates

“Busy, busy, busy”

This is the gate to the old City where the local buses and cruise coaches come in, so it does get very busy.

Just outside, there are cafes and bars, souvenir shops and tourist info, plus it's where the leaders of the guided walking tours and kayaking expeditions stand, touting for business. The entrance looks great by night, lit up, and the lower area to its left has a small children's playground, which is also well lit at night. Once inside the gate, the whole of Old Dubrovnik main street opens out before you. To your right is Onofrio's fountain, meeting point for the tours, plus tourist info, shops, ticket office for the Wall walk and public loos (Tip - always have small change for the toilets. Either there's someone outside waiting to let you in, or there's a slot in the door. Price is generally about 7 kuna). Inside the Pile Gate to your left is the flight of steep stone steps up to the Wall walk. Just along on the left is the entrance to the Pharmacy Museum and interestingly a small stone attached to the wall of a building which young local men appear to try to climb on and take off their shirts! We watched this in amazement for some time. No-one succeeded! I think you would not stay very long at the Pile Gate. Better to walk through and into the magic that is Old Dubrovnik.
