This is a island with a national park that we hiked through. We arrived by sail boat. It is not a place frequented by huge cruise ships. It is picturesque but a very small town. We ate on our boat.

“Turquoise waters...”

The national park is excellent, the country is learning to revere its natural resources as it does its man made treasures.

“Natural appeal...”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

There are no two ways about it, Mljet is beautiful. When you arrive there, knowing that you have only one return ferry, which goes via the island's two ports, there is really not much information about your options of things to do, beyond on what you can read on Lonely Planet. Unless, of course you have planned enough time to stay for a few days... Fortunately, if you follow your instincts, you are certain to find some delightful nooks and some things to do. Weather appropriate, come prepared to swim or cycle!

“Is it really so special?”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

We had read through reviews by travelers adoring Mljet because of it's stunning views, crystal clear water and beauty of nature park. So we decided to rent a car and make a day trip there.

Lets count:
rent of a car 45 euros a day + gasoline
tickets to the park 33 euros
ferry 80 euros

So 158 euros and a full day spent for a trip. Was it worth it? Honestly, I don't think so.

Yes, it was beautiful, but so is the cost line in Croatia everywhere, nothing special in Mljet. Maybe if you travel only to one city and want then to see some nature too, this is a good option. Or if you are crazy for biking hours up to the hill or hiking, then you might love it.

Anyway, once we got to the gate of the Nature Park Area, we expected to see some Forest Lakes and "wild nature". Instead we found out that in the Nature Park there are restaurants, lakes' outlines are very much built by people and walking route is more like a pavement than a path. For Finns, who have seen forests and lakes all of their life, this was far from what we expected.

Water of the lakes in Mljet is really warm and clear. It was lovely to swim there. Could see small fishes all around me. We were also happy to see beautiful butterflies but unfortunately when we tried to start to enjoy picnic by the lake, there were no butterflies but wasps attacking our lunch. I'm not talking about few insects but lots of them. We changed place, but same happened again. So we were hungry.

Although roads in the park were well built, there was not enough signs on the way. And not enough information about boat routes and timetables inside the national park. So instead of walking maybe 2-3- kilometres with kids (that we had planned) we ended up walking more than 7 kilometres and still getting to the wrong boat.

At the end of the day we were tired, hungry and a bit disappointed.

“So pretty!”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

Mljet is mainly a nature reserve with two lakes and two small towns. Loved the walk around the lake - possible to picnic, swim, kayak, cycle. Beautiful views. Had a relaxing, quiet day there. I went with a tour agency (Amico travel) which saved time on figuring out how to get from the port to the old monastery, and from the monastery to the lakes. They also provided us with an excellent meal of grilled fresh mackerel and fresh salads - wonderful tomatoes!
