Just back from a week at Villa Antea. Some good and some definitely not so good. We were picked up from the airport and arrived at the villa 30 minutes later where we were greeted with a welcome drink. So far, so good. The studio we were given was OK but the next day we were told we would have to move rooms the morning after - I was about to protest but was told it would be an upgrade to a one-bedroom apartment so we went with it and came to the conclusion that it was worth the inconvenience . So, overall still happy - we were finding our way round the area and finding that it was easy to get into the Old Town by bus. The view from the rooftop terrace and pool is very nice too. But imagine our surprise when, on the Tuesday night as we made our way past reception on our way out, we were asked by Damir if we had been told we would have to move again the next day - this time back to a (different) studio.
Now I am not faulting Damir at all in this, he was most helpful and friendly throughout the week. But we told him that being asked, or rather told, to move again was not acceptable and asked what the reason was for this, the answer we got was that they had had some problems with hotels.com (the site we booked with) and had accepted a booking for this apartment from somebody else. I said that I wasn't happy with being messed about like this, especially given the short notice, and wanted to speak to the owner in the morning.
The next day, we had a knock at the door from one of the cleaners, who basically explained the same story to us, she was very apologetic and understanding and said she would phone the owner and ask him to come down and give us an explanation and would also ask him about offering a discount for the inconvenience. He arrived around 15 minutes later but as he doesn't speak much English, he had to pass us over to Damir on his mobile to explain. I then asked Damir to speak to him again and tell him in no uncertain terms that this was not the way to treat paying customers. The owner did not seem at all interested in what I had to say and was only interested in getting us out of the room ASAP. His attitude to the whole situation seemed to be "I'll do what I want, this is my villa". I told him that if we were forced to move for a second time, I would expect some form of discount. He flatly refused this and after a further exchange of views ended up offering a bottle of wine instead!
In the end he ended up rudely snatching the key out of my girlfriend's hand which riled us further - there was no need for him to do this as I had already agreed via Damir that although we were pretty angry at the way this situation had been forced on us, that we would move (short of staging a sit-in, I don't think we had an alternative).
I guess he felt that unsettling and annoying us was the lesser of two evils compared to telling a couple who had booked the bigger apartment that they were being downgraded. But then, why move us from the studio in the first place? We'd have been perfectly happy to stay put for the whole week, isn't this what you'd normally expect?
It's a shame that this had to happen - while we were not going to let it ruin our week, it certainly took some of the gloss off it. The apartments themselves are of a decent standard, and you have the beach, the nearby Valamar hotel with fantastic pool, and shops/bars/restaurants all within 10 minutes walk. And Dubrovnik is a wonderful city!
I can understand that sometimes mix-ups and double bookings happen but both the way it was communicated to us and the attitude towards sorting the problem out was completely unacceptable. I'm afraid that the customer-focused, helpful attitude of Damir was not shared by the owner (I see from some of the other reviews that this isn't the first time he has treated guests in a rude, arrogant or underhand way) and that has made all the difference.
