We spent 3 days in this very charming city in the south of Croatia on the Adriatic. We visited the museum by riding the tram to the top of the small mountain. The history of this country is so fascinating. They have been involved in so many wars but are now living in peace. The museum is a must see. Plan on spending a few hours there. They have food and drinks with outdoor seating and a wonderful vew.

The walled city of Dubrovnik is wonderful. It is a trip back in time. Plan at least one full day there because it offers so many shops and so much history.

Srdj Imperial Fort was originally built by the French in the Napoleon Age, with works going on between 1806 and 1812. Later it was extended by the authorities of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

In 1991 it was some action during the Yugoslavian Civil War, of the Homeland War as the Croats call it. Nowadays it is partially abandoned, but in some of the rooms (5 or 6) the visitor can visit the Museum of the Homeland Way (30 Kunas entrance fee – can get cheaper ticket if you combine with cable car fare from their ticket office). When we visited (October) is stays open until 22:00h despite most website advertising a closing time of 18:00h.

There are lots of photographs and maps of the war zones near the city. The news clips showing the siege of Dubrovnik is interesting, wait to see the videos of the soldiers within the fort cooking food to make the visit more atmospheric. We did find the commentary a bit one sided though, but it is modern history so worth learning about.

Take your camera and ascend the stairs to the top of the fort for the most amazing photos of the old town and surrounding islands and mountains. Sunset is always magical!

Situated in the fortress at the top of Mount Srd next to the cable car top station. See and learn about the destruction caused by the serbs as recently as 1991. Dubrovnik was besieged and attacked in October 1991, with the major fighting ending in early 1992 and the Croatian counterattack finally lifting the siege and liberating the area in mid-1992, despite suffering heavy losses. The city itself was without electricity or fresh water for at least two months, until the end of December 1991, since the JNA forces bombarded the district's electrical grid. The population at that time was dependent on ships for their water supply

Small museum, not easy to find. But go, read what is written, watch the video and sit down to think about life. Don't try to understand. The only thing you can do when you're back in the street is imitate Sir Alex Guinness at the end of the movie: "Bridge on the river Kwai" and say aloud madness.

We thought it was very interesting and the film explaining about the war was good as were all the information posters.
