“The best location in Dubrovnik!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

This was by far our best choice of all places in Croatia and I have to thank my husband for choosing it over the hotel that I wanted to book. What to say; they met us on the entrance to the Old Town, escorted us to the apartment, gave us many great tips and so check in was perfect. The place is perfectly clean and comfortable and in reality it looks a bit bigger than on the pictures. It felt so good to stay there, over an art gallery and in the center of the magnificent town.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Stradun Apartments in late September 2013. Stradun Apartments are two apartments, one on each of the second and third floors in a building above an art gallery and a restaurant. We stayed in the apartment on the second floor.

Pros

- We liked the location. It is just south of the Stradun, a few minutes walk east of the west gate (Pile Gate) to the old town.
- The room has modern furnishings, a spacious kitchen and living room, the wi-fi is fine and the shower had hot water.
- Booking the apartment was straightforward - Maro and his colleague (whose name escapes me) were very quick to reply via email. Check-in also was straightforward - we advised Maro's colleague of our arrival and Mia met us at the apartment to check us in. Maro's colleague was also helpful - the window above the sink was missing window blinds and we emailed him and he attached the blinds later that day.

Cons

- The kitchen and bathroom are above the art gallery below but the living room generally and the bedroom are above a restaurant. At the end of each day, we often came back to the apartment and our clothes in the bedroom more than slightly smelling like the restaurant (especially fish) below.
- Part of the shower door was broken (out of the track) during our stay, resulting in some water splashing on the bathroom floor (no big deal, the bathmat soaked it up). Maro's colleague did try and fix the door though although it continued to fall out of the track. The bathroom could use more shelves.
- The bedroom is small because of the large wardrobe next to the bed, leaving about a foot and a half of space between the wardrobe and the bed. The bed is a pull-out couch and the mattress isn't terribly comfortable.
- The window blinds did shut out most of the light but the windows were below-average in shutting out the street noise (which wasn't terribly loud as the apartments aren't next to a bar or club but there is still street noise).
- It would have been nice value-adds to have a floor mirror, beach towels (which we had at lower priced accomodations elsewhere in southern Croatia) and some kind of arrangement to store luggage after check out (on our day of check-out, we were leaving Dubrovnik in the late afternoon to catch an evening flight to London and we were permitted to leave our luggage on the apartment stairs above the art gallery, which was fine, except that the art gallery owner wasn't sure whether she was going to stay open or not and if she closed we wouldn't have been able to get our luggage from the apartment stairs, so we had to check our luggage with the left-luggage/tourism shop just east of Pile Gate for approximately CDN $25 for a few hours, which we weren't too pleased about since accomodations in Dubrovnik are generally on the high-end).

Summary

Notwithstanding the cons, we would consider returning to Stradun Apartments because we prefer to stay in the old town instead of, for example, Lapad.

We only stayed one night but fabulous apartment in old Dubrovnik....2 or 3 small streets down the Stradun from Pile gate entrance, so close to everything but quite at night for sleeping. Everything you need right on hand. Only thing was maybe coffee/tea, sugar and a bit of milk for early risers would have been a nice touch.

Room Tip: Would definitely stay there again. Mia met use at the Pile gate from our taxi and escorted us to the...

It was exactly as described, and communication with the owner beforehand was straight-forward. Relatively quiet, it's quite close to Stradun and so close to everything. All good facilities as advertised, so we are happy.

We stayed there for 3 nights 29th of December to 1st of January. New Year in Dubrovnik was not very good this time and if we didn't stay at such a nice apartment I would be very unhappy with the experience. The apartment was really great: great location, central heating, very charming. Zeljko was a great host and he made us feel very welcome on the check in. All in all, this is the best place we ever stayed in Dubrovnik and we will come back.

We are two couples so we booked two apartments. I was a bit worried to stay in a place like this in the winter because you never know if the heating will work right etc. It turned out there was central heating, place was really clean and comfortable and it looks better in real than on the pictures. I am so glad we didn't stay at the hotel! Just across the street there was a nice an cozy restaurant where we had our breakfast every morning and in short , the location was superb. I can only congratulate the designer and a good job. Check in and communication with Maro and Zeljko was really simple and efficient. My advice is don't look and further.

Room Tip: Both apartments are the same I think, our friend used the other one and I see no difference in quali...

I really wanted to experience the old town and the thought of being imprisoned at a conference hotel 20 minutes from the city was unappealing. I found this one on booking.com and took a chanced as there aren't many real hotels in the old city.

I really wasn't disappointed, although the old town is an easy taxi ride there is something about waking up an historic building and cross the alleyway for the included breakfast. According to the map at the gate by attic living room received a ‘military present’ at some point in 1991 and the new timbers corroborate this theory!

The apartment was comfortable with massively efficient air con. Great high speed internet connection. It is a couple of streets inside the Pile Gate ty and was clean on arrival with absolutely NO evidence of bugs or any other uninvited wildlife.

The entrance is through an artist’s shop/studio and available at all times. The manager, Zeljko, provided an excellent briefing on arrival and is also the publisher of one of the restaurant guides and gave some useful advice on dining - well at least on the ones he represents!!!! He provided a cellphone and email and could be easily contacted to arrange check-out and payment (it is currently cash only).
