We spent 3 nights in Dubrovnik, at the Valamar Lacroma which was booked through BA. We picked it because it was a late deal...however, we were far from disappointed.
The hotel is a 35min cab ride from the airport (270 Kuna / £32) with the roads good and the coast road scenery stunning the holiday started here. When we arrived at the hotel, check in was smooth and we were made to feel very welcome - we were sat by the outdoor pool by 2pm in glorious sunshine drinking a beer.
Our room had a sea view and balcony - the latter was small, but I suspect you won't be spending much time there. We had a large comfortable bed, air conditioning and a shower (no bath in our room). Friends who came with us had a bath but at 6' 2" I doubt I would have fitted to easily, so we were happy with the room - it was spotlessly clean and serviced to a high standard every day.
There is a safe, ironing board (for those who must) and tea/coffee facitlities. The hotel is built on several levels, but there are lifts for those who don't like stairs (helps to work off some of the excellent food) and the manner in which it has built into the hillside means that it doesn't look as big and overbearing as some hotels can.
Staff, all of whom speak excellent English, couldn't have been more helpful, welcoming or courteous - we were made to feel welcome and felt that we were as important to them as anyone else (special mention to Marija and Tea - thank you both). The food, plentiful and delicious. It is a buffet style and there is no need to knock the doors down at 7pm for dinner - it doesn't run out and the hot food is cooked in front of you - so a wait of 5mins is hardly a problem to have freshly cooked and flavoursome food. Try the Dalmatian beef, it is to die for.
The facilities are excellent - the outside pool was cold - but then it was May, and there were plenty of sunbeds and fresh towels. All the facilities were spotless and well maintained. We had time for a massage each in the spa and this too was up to the hotel's very high standards - well worth booking a session.
We spent time in the old town, go by bus (N0. 6) it's 24 Kuna return and the hotel is at the end of the line - it takes around 20mins to get there and is a good way to get about. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone we met and all speak very good English and all the shops, cafes and restaurants cater for non-native speakers.
Overall, we found the whole trip was a delight and fabulous value for money - my only gripe, was that we didn't book for longer!! We will definitely be coming back to Croatia and to this hotel, I cannot praise it highly enough - thank you to all the staff who helped make the trip most enjoyable.
