Reviewed June 4, 2014

We spent 3 nights in Dubrovnik, at the Valamar Lacroma which was booked through BA. We picked it because it was a late deal...however, we were far from disappointed.

The hotel is a 35min cab ride from the airport (270 Kuna / £32) with the roads good and the coast road scenery stunning the holiday started here. When we arrived at the hotel, check in was smooth and we were made to feel very welcome - we were sat by the outdoor pool by 2pm in glorious sunshine drinking a beer.

Our room had a sea view and balcony - the latter was small, but I suspect you won't be spending much time there. We had a large comfortable bed, air conditioning and a shower (no bath in our room). Friends who came with us had a bath but at 6' 2" I doubt I would have fitted to easily, so we were happy with the room - it was spotlessly clean and serviced to a high standard every day.

There is a safe, ironing board (for those who must) and tea/coffee facitlities. The hotel is built on several levels, but there are lifts for those who don't like stairs (helps to work off some of the excellent food) and the manner in which it has built into the hillside means that it doesn't look as big and overbearing as some hotels can.

Staff, all of whom speak excellent English, couldn't have been more helpful, welcoming or courteous - we were made to feel welcome and felt that we were as important to them as anyone else (special mention to Marija and Tea - thank you both). The food, plentiful and delicious. It is a buffet style and there is no need to knock the doors down at 7pm for dinner - it doesn't run out and the hot food is cooked in front of you - so a wait of 5mins is hardly a problem to have freshly cooked and flavoursome food. Try the Dalmatian beef, it is to die for.

The facilities are excellent - the outside pool was cold - but then it was May, and there were plenty of sunbeds and fresh towels. All the facilities were spotless and well maintained. We had time for a massage each in the spa and this too was up to the hotel's very high standards - well worth booking a session.

We spent time in the old town, go by bus (N0. 6) it's 24 Kuna return and the hotel is at the end of the line - it takes around 20mins to get there and is a good way to get about. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone we met and all speak very good English and all the shops, cafes and restaurants cater for non-native speakers.

Overall, we found the whole trip was a delight and fabulous value for money - my only gripe, was that we didn't book for longer!! We will definitely be coming back to Croatia and to this hotel, I cannot praise it highly enough - thank you to all the staff who helped make the trip most enjoyable.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a sea view...but all rooms are spotlessly clean, a good size and air conditioned...

we stayed here for 4 nights. the room is spaciuos, clean and cosy, but our room was way too far from the elevator. the building is not friendly at all and there are huge distances between the elevators, rooms, breakfast restaurant and the rest. Reception was OK but nothing more. views are nice but not breathtaking, as the hotel is 2nd or 3rd row from the sea.
you had to ask for robes and slippers, and the way to the pool was again very long and not friendly, through corridors, stairs, elevator and what not! the pool and the spa were lovely and enjoyable. the best highlight is the BREAKFAST - really amazing selections, generous and tasty.
the chef restaurant was really good. beware of eating in the lobby- awfal food, no resemblance to the chef restaurant or the breakfast- really not recommended to eat in the lobby!
last i would add that in one evening i had a splitting headache, and the nice receptionist could not find a simple ordinary pill (usually have but finished....) which for me was a symbol so the lack of soul and real care for the guests. so not bad at all, but with a little more effort could become Fab.
yes and there is no beach to this hotel, they refer you to another hotel in the chain but then you have a 10 minutes walk some of it in the middle of construction work, true to end of May 2014. so we stayed in the pool....

Room Tip: ask for the front rows, and closer to the elevators. include breakfast in your booking- it is worth...

Dear Guests,
Thank you very much on your review and greetings from Lacroma team. We are happy to hear that despite the smaller inconveniences and the size of the hotel you were still able to enjoy your stay with us. As a 4* property we do not offer slippers and bathrobes as a standard set up, only in the suites and on request by our guests hence there was none for you in the room. Unfortunately, and this is a common practice not only in Croatia, we are not able to offer any medicines on the reception because of the risks involved. We never know if the guests can be allergic to certain substances and as a result suffer serious reactions. Any medicine can be prescribed only by the doctor or bought over the counter in a pharmacy where professionals can advise on the substances and effects they can have. We hope you will understand that due to the health risks we cannot thus offer these services to our guests but can always call a doctor if necessary.
Great to hear you have enjoyed the breakfast and we hope you will be able to come back now that our sister hotel President is open and the beach is easily accessible.
Yours sincerely

We booked the hotel through booking.com as they seemed to have the best deals. The hotel is very well looked after, the facilities are good and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Take the coastal walk down to lapad for some good restaurants and a lovely bar called the cavebar to watch the sunset. Get the number 6 bus into town, they run until the small hours so no rush to get back. When in Dubrovnik, try a kayak tour around the old town and surrounds, its a lovely way to see everything and very informative. The people of dubrovnik are generally really friendly, just watch out for the bus drivers! Get a travel card if you're planning to go into the old town regularly. Enjoy staying in a fabulous hotel in a beautiful location, we definitely did!

We chose this hotel after looking at it's trip advisor rating and previous recent reviews so we felt it only fair to write our own to help others decide this is the right hotel for them. I am writing this review whist still staying in The Lacroma as it's a long review and would not have time to do it properly when I get home, so here goes

I would recommend The Valamar Dubrovnik hotel to anyone wanting a holiday that had more of a luxury feel. Firstly, Dubrovnik is just stunning, and although the hotel is not in the 'old town' there are nearby bars/restaurants and a very cheap bus service (the number 6 bus which runs every 10 minutes. The old town is 6Km/10 minute bus ride, the bus stop is just 1 minute from the hotel front door (15kn/2€ one way, but buy the return ticket, it's 30kn/4€ but can be used as many times as you want back and forth in 24hrs.
There is plenty to do for a weeks holiday - boat trips around the islands, jet ski, cable car, walking the walls, maritime museums, river rafting in Montenegro are all things we did and enjoyed (although trip to Montenegro river rafting was a very long drive away). Eating and drinking is also quite cheap vs rest of Europe.
The hotel rooms are very spacious, comfortable and crucially very clean the beds were lovely with real feather pillows.
The rooms also include a well stocked, great value mini-bar
The free wifi in the throughout the hotel is lightning fast (50Mbps)

One problem we had (air con problem on first night say due to hotel getting a new AC system which had too much air in it)was sorted very quickly, engineers turned up within 10minutes of us informing reception.
The 2 pools are lovely with a choice of somewhere to cool off outside and the indoor pool is heated to 28degrees. Space around the hotel and pool area is very big and everywhere looks brand new and clean with lots of sun loungers the place never felt busy.
We took advantage of the hotels spa facilities and the massages and pedicures were brilliant and fantastic value for money.
The food is absolutely brilliant with great friendly service, even the most fussy eater won't be disappointed - lots of choice, all fresh and the meat/ fish/ pasta / stone-baked pizza is done right there in front of you.
One thing that made my stay at the Lacroma more enjoyable was the staff. All of them say hello whenever you pass them and a couple of staff even remembered my first name. The Spa manager was one and the young restaurant manager the other. Both welcoming me with a handshake and smile every time I saw them. which made my day

In summary, although the Lacroma is a officially a 4 star hotel, we experienced much better service and food found in many 5 star hotels we have visited in the past.

You will not be disappointed.

5 stars from me.
Thank you

This hotel is located about 15 minutes outside of the old city. Across the road from the hotel there is a bus that takes you right to the gates of the old city. This is a lovely hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, a workout room, good bed and pillows, a nice restaurant with buffet breakfast, nice bar area and outside seating with bar service. The hotel is very spread out with lots of stairs to get down to the restaurant (but there is an elevator). Our room was quite a walk from the entry but on the ground floor. We had a patio but hardly used it because we were so busy. There is a small shopping area and three or four small restaurants a short walk away behind the hotel. Ladies, bring you own soap! And wash cloths if you use them. The soap provided are small, hard rounds that don't lather well. This was the best hotel of our trip.

Room Tip: A room with a patio is nice. I can't say anything about value because we were with a tour group.

Hotel is gorgeous so as the view, it is so comfortable, refined, cosy and you get a feeling as you are at home in great villa because of the home atmosphere that is formed by great hotel personnel. I was touched by young professional faces of waitress and cook who served us with fabulous food but also great positive energy. Environment and view are perfect. Towels on the swimming pool that are waiting for you…splendid. Big + for ladys Afrodita SPA.

Room Tip: Choose the one with see view because you do not want to miss this one.
