“My favorite place in Split to have a coffee”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

I haven't been to Venice so far, so maybe that's why for me it is a unique feeling sitting on prokurative (= Trg Republike) and enjoying the sun and coffee while people are doing the same, or just passing by, visiting the theatre, kids are playing ball or tag on the square, cats are following their business... Somehow you can feel sheltered here from the hectic rush of the city. Perfect place to take a break! That might be a difference to Venice.

“For the love of Venice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2012

At the end of Split's watefront Riva is a marvelous square called the Prokurative, which sits grandely up a few steps from the promenade.
If it looks familiar, it is--actually a design based on St. Mark's Sq. in Venice. The original architect, a Venetian and lover of the city, was sent to Split and so missed his home city, he decided to erect this marvelous square. As you face it, look up to your left at all of the wonderful carved reliefs. Now follow them all the way to the center and then to the right hand facade. They simply stop--instead, on the entire right facade the spaces where the carvings would go are completely blank! Apparently, the architect/designer was finally called back to Venice, and was so glad to go, he literally dropped everything and the carvings that were supposed to be part of the Prokutative remain unfinished. In the summer this square is used by the city as an outdoor venue for its Arts Festival. Otherwise it's a wonderful place for a coffee (the grand dame Bellevue Hotel is just to the left) or a very good lunch or dinner at the newly opened Bajamonti which sits in the center of the square in the rear in what used to be a movie theatre. Spalatin, an excellent cafe that also serves pizza and other food, has lots of outdoor shaded tables so the entire square is a delightful place to view the sea, sit and enjoy a drink or a meal and feel like you're in Venice!

“Great square next to Bellevue hotel”

Spacious square, built 1863 - 1867, often hosting concerts and cultural events. There are 2 coffee shops with outdoor seatings to enjoy the views from on a sunny day.
