“Worth the hike to the top”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

Just had a day in Split and think it is one of the best examples of a port town on the whole coast. It is clean and provided you just go a little into the town you do not get the tourist rip-off that's found so often. When you have explored the town and want a LITTLE exercise head over to the marina side of the port (the left from the sea) and find the steps up to the ZOO, it's quite a pull up there, there is a cafe 1/2 way and NOTHING at the top except for a fantastic 360 view. If you have the time you can come down the 'back' and walk around the spit back to port.
Think this a much more interesting place than many of the others.

“Variety Abounds”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

Such a variety of attractions around old Split. There is something there for everyone. Historical architecture, great restaurants and bars, shopping with both branded labels and not so branded labels in the markets and above all, very friendly people.

Easy to get around, although some of the smaller lanes are geographically challenging, and even on a rainy day (rained all day for us) there are options to stay dry and still get around with narrow lanes and tall building providing shelter from the weather.

“Living history among the ruins”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

We took a day trip from Bol on Brac Island. It's only an hour away by catamaran which drops you in the harbour directly in front of the old city.
As lovers of Roman history, we were prepared to be impressed by the old city which is built in and around the palace of the Emperor Diocletian, built in the late 3rd/early 4th centuries AD. What we found met our expectations and more. Every corner you turn reveals yet another fascinating view, down a narrow, shaded alley, medieval buildings leaning against the walls of the Roman palace, great little bars and restaurants and sunlit courtyards and squares.
We first did a half-circuit of the walls, passing Narodni Trg (People's Square) and a huge statue by Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović, of Saint Gregory of Nin, a 10th century bishop who introduced the Croatian language into religious services. If you rub the statue's toe it is meant to bring you good luck, so everyone walking down the steps does so and the toe has been worn smooth and shiny from all the passers-by. After the statue, we entered by the Gold Gate walking down one of the central streets to the cathedral which was originally the Emperor's mausoleum. A tour of the cathedral is impressive, with images of Diocletian and Empress Prisca, which were supposedly allowed to remain when it was converted to a church in order to mock the emperor who had persecuted and killed so many Christians.
The campanile of the cathedral is open to the public and worth climbing the 180 steps for the amazing view over the city and the bay to the islands and the surrounding mountains. Leaving the cathedral, you can descend steps into the substructure of the palace and see the original Roman brickwork.
We ate in Trg Republike (Republic Square) which is just to the west of the old city. There are a number of restaurants in the square which is open to the sea on the south side with views of the Adriatic sparkling in the sunshine. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars in the old city though, if you want to eat in the shade or want to watch the world go by. The food is really good value and freshly prepared.
In front of the old city is the promenade which is also a place to eat and drink whilst watching people walk up and down. As in many places along the coast, the ice creams are excellent with a wide variety of choices.
Overall, the city won't disappoint those looking for culture, ancient history, great food and a relaxing day out.
