“No frills hotel right in the centre of things”
Reviewed June 26, 2009

We stayed here for 4 nights. Hotel approached down a narrow stepped alley with tables for a cocktail bar on each step. Further steps up to the hotel reception and no lift so need to carry suitcases up to your room. The room was fairly small but clean and had everything we needed - could have done with a few more clothes hangers! Breakfast was extremely basic, staff helpful enough and location fantastic. We were 2 minutes walk from the sea front, and 5 minutes from the ferry port and bus station. On Saturday night we had to fight our way past revellers to get into the hotel and it was very noisy but what do you expect if you choose a central hotel. Overall we felt this was good value for the money we paid - HRK 3300. Would recommend a trip to Trogir and Hvar both accessible by ferry.

We stayed for one night only at the Slavija hotel. The hotel was located inside the Dioclectian's palace and our room on the third floor was spacious with a large and newly renovated bathroom. There wase even a small balcony facing the street.

The room was clean with a good king size bed. The bathroom as mentioned was modern and spotless. The hotel itself is located very convenient near the ferries and nicely tucked in between the narrow street of the Dioclectian palace. The drawback of such a good location is however that on the street just a step away from the entrance (and directly below our window) is a bar and judging from the crowd it's a very popular such. The windows were pretty good isolated but still there was a lot of noise. But yet again, if you choose to stay at this location you should probably expect some noice. The streets are really narrow and there is a lot of bars everywhere. The other drawback, which I personally think is worse, was the breakfast. The coffe machine produced something which didn't look like coffe, it didn't smell like coffe and it certainly didn't taste like coffe. In fact I didn't manage to drink it at all. The rest of the breakfast was nothing worth mentioning. I got a yoghurt and that was it.

To sum up though, the rooms were very good and the location (expect from the noise) was good. We don't have any remarks on the service, but we didn't really had much contact with the staff since we only stayed for one night. I would recommend it for the location and for the nice rooms. But if you value a good night (quiet) sleep and think of breakafst as the most important meal of the day you should probably look somewhere else.

We booked this hotel on internet from Hvar because we needed one night in Split on our way home. We travelled with 3 children under 3 years old and booked this 4-star hotel because of usual facilities that you can expect of this many stars. After one night there its clear that this hotel can't possibly be a 4-star hotel. Rather one or two stars.

The first impression was terrible. A long stairway up to the reception made it complicated for us with our twin carrier and all luggage. At least we got help in carrying from personel.

The reception was very outdated and was not the place you would hang out. There was a bar, but it looked like it had been unactive for ages. The reception women did not smile once during check in. She gave us a larger room because she saw all our children, but we choosed to go back to the smaller one because the big one looked like a hospital.

The room (204) was basic, but clean. We were next to a noisy bar et the entrance stairways, but it didn't bother us when we closed the balcony door. The room, as the rest of the hotel, had no charm. What about a picture on the wall, in the hall or in the reception that is not 30 years old?

The breakfast was just terrible. The eggs was almost boiled black and the coffee was awful. The room was uncosy and had very old blash pictures on the wall. We had to eat something else at the cafeterieas outside.

A 4-star hotel has loads of facilities. This hotel had only bed & "breakfast". No internet in the reception, no bar(coffe/tea), no resturant, no playroom, no pool, no fitness center, no service and very bad breakfast. Because of very bad weather on our stay in Split we had to be inside most of the time and with no facilities we were very bored. When we left the hotel the lady at the reception did not say goodbye. The evening receptionist was helpful with things we asked for, but did not know where the airport transport were leaving from. That should be basic information for a receptionist.

If we knew that we hadn't already been charged before arrival we would have moved to another hotel. We will never book this hotel again. The style of it is for backpackers, but the price is not.

Our one night stay at the Hotel Slavija was pleasant enough. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The stairs to the hotel and up to our 3rd floor room were not wonderful with luggage; there is no elevator.
Our room was large by European standards, and the beds were separated by a night stand unlike most beds I've run across in European hotels. Our room had a mini-balcony with just enough room to stand; not all rooms offer this amenity. The air conditioning worked well.
The bathroom was fine, but the shower head did not fit into its holder properly so it sort of sagged and was difficult to get a proper shower under. Some other people in our group had the same problem in other rooms.
The main drawback of this hotel is the noise. At the front of the hotel there is a busy Café/Bar which is quite noisy into the night. We slept with earplugs which cut out most of the noise.
The breakfast room is tiny and seats only 16. The breakfast itself was decent. It consisted of a buffet with eggs, bread and fruit.

I stayed here in April 2009 for 3 nights. It was not peak season and the town was pleasantly quiet. There werent too many tourists so the palace was easy to navigate and enjoy.

The hotel is fine and the rooms clean. The room was small but not too bad. I wasnt looking for a large room since most of the time I was out in the town. There is a busy club right outside the hotel but I couldnt really hear it in my room. I was in room 302 on the side of the building. I am sure the rooms in front would hear the noise. The club was very busy even though this was not peak season yet. The good thing is that clubs close at 1 AM.

Great hotel, very friendly but just be careful on choosing your room.

Nice clean modern hotel with aircon , helpfull staff and in a great location.

Bit tricky to get to by foot if you have a lot of luggage and I don't think you can get that close to it by car.

However its located over/next to a nightclub which didn't shut on a Thursday night until around 4am. Not great when you have a flight at 7am the next morning. Even with the windows shut the noise was unberable. In the corridor I couldn't hold a conversation with the night porter as the music was that loud!

Its a shame as it is really is a nice place, and Split is just fantastic. Probably fine if you're out clubing, but don't staty here if bed before the small hours is a priority!

I stayed for 5 nights in the hotel, while visting Split and the islands. The staff were very helpful, accomodating and kind and the room perfect. The hotel is very well situated inside Diocletian's palace and walking distance from the harbour, bus station and train station. I would reocmmend it for families as welll as couples or single travellers.

Hotel Slavija is type of a heritage hotel due to its location, history and protection by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and UNESCO. The Diocletian's Palace was built in the middle of the 3rd century AD, while the Hotel Slavija was built inside its walls, above the Emperor's western baths. Therefore, it can be concluded that the building of the hotel influenced the protection of the Baths from the devastation. With time the building of the hotel expanded, and from the Baroque palace it became today's Hotel Slavija. Hotel Slavija is under the protection of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and in part is protected by the UNESCO. The location in the very center of the town makes Hotel Slavija an ideal choice for a stay in Split, surrounded by all relevant historical buildings of the city of Split, including the Temple of Jupiter, the St. Duje Cathedral, the Milesi palace... It is ideal place for both business and pleasure travelers because of its location. Hotel is situated in the very center of the city and is but a few minutes walk from all the major attractions as well as from the main bus terminal, airport shuttle terminal, railway station and ferry. The hotel has 25 rooms and each room is air conditioned, with private bath, hair dryer, satellite TV, Internet connection and direct dial telephone. Some of the rooms are with terraces and Hotel is especially proud to present them because, terraces are rarity in the old part of Split.
