We happened upon this little gem of a museum one evening and it was well worth it - probably the highlight of our trip to Croatia.
It's a fascinating exhibition of, well, stuffed frogs! To cut a long story short, about a hundred years ago, a very rich, very eccentric gentleman of leisure - with a frog full of lakes - used his taxidermy skills to stuff frogs and create elaborate set pieces which reflect life at that time as seen through the eyes of well-off Croat. The scenes are very varied and include a circus, some rather brutal dentistry, a rowdy classroom, a boat race and drunks being thrown out of a tavern. The attention to detail is amazing and there is a very sophisticated humour behind it all.
The exhibition is housed in a charming old cinema and our guide was superb. The entry fee was unbelievably cheap, and as we were the only ones there we got top class service - being guided through each exhibit by the curator himself. His passion and enthusiasm for the collection made it all the more special and it was truly fascinating.
I am not a fan of taxidermy, but you must bear in mind that this is something created a long time ago when attitudes to such things were very different. This is a real glimpse in to the life of a very individual figure from Croatia's past and was quite wonderful. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
