We booked a double room in Apartments Fortezza (which has 3 apartment rooms) and is ideally located right in the heart of Diocletian’s Palace in the old town (a vehicle free zone) on the first floor level.
Finding the apartments can be a slight challenge, but then that is frequently the case with “old town” accommodation in Europe, where signage can at times be limited. The street is well known within the old town and if one asks a local vendor for directions, there should be minimal problems. Alternatively, the owner is a most accommodating type of person and would undoubtedly assist with directions or even arrange to meet at an agreed point, if contacted in advance of arrival.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the friendly owner who made us most welcome. The double room was nicely furnished, of adequate size, very clean, air-conditioned with free Wi-Fi and also surprisingly quiet, bearing in mind the central location. A small fridge and coffee making facilities were also in the room. The bathroom was extremely modern having both an excellent shower and toiletries provided.
The only issue we had with the double room, was that it was portrayed on Booking.com as having a king bed (when in fact it was a queen bed) and the bed was extremely hard, with both my wife and I subsequently having previous back problems flair up following our two night stay. Therefore, if you have back problems, we wouldn’t recommend you stay here, although in fairness, most of Croatia has similarly quite hard beds.
Besides the central location, Apartments Fortezza is within a 5 minute walk of the ferries and bus station and in easy walking distance to the nearby sandy Bačvice Beach. Many restaurants, cafes and bars are also close by.
If arriving by car during the busy summer periods, parking can present a major problem and it is probably best to phone the owner in advance for guidance on where best to park, particularly, if one has a significant amount of luggage to cart.
Bearing in mind the excellent location and style of the accommodation, the cost of 85 euro’s per night (room only) during peak season, appeared very reasonable for Split. I would therefore have no hesitation in recommending Apartments Fortezza for a lovely stay, providing one does not have an issue with very hard beds or back problems.
