This museum is fantastic! There is a lot of information that explains the history of Dalmatia. The artifacts they have are excellent. I think this museum may be unappreciated for how great it is, simply because it's outside of Diocletian's palace. Go see this museum! You will not be disappointed!!!

Don't you get mad at yourself for forming opinions before you have the facts? I just knew this was going to be another dusty closet full of stuff not good enough to have been carted off to a grand museum elsewhere in the world. I was totally wrong...it was wonderful! Full of special things...well worth the effort to leave the tourist path and find gems of history. Our entire family found it exciting and one of the best things of Split.

The Archaeological Museum Split is a well set out museum. The displays feature both Croatian and English language descriptions of the exhibits in a more or less chronological order. One of the highlights inside the museum is the collection of Roman Empire coins. Outside, the sarcophagi and stela are beautiful. Mostly garnered from Salonae (Solin), they are well worth the time to study closely. I was amazed to see that there were only a dozen or so people at the museum on the day. This was my second visit to this museum. The first was in 1972 on a cold winters day, and there was no one visiting then. I don't think this museum can be anything like the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities but, with a few more statues of emperors and perhaps roman weaponry, it could get a new lease of life. Maybe I'm mistaken but I remember this museum having weaponry and more exhibits. There was a section closed off: still its worth a few hours and it is a nice walk to the museum.

Ten minutes walking from the city centre, it is a good way to retrace the history of Split. In the courtyard there are a lot of sarcophagi and reliefs, many coming from Salona, as well as mosaics and a sphinx from the Dioclatian's palace, dating 1400 BC. Inside the museum several little objects of daily life from the Greek time to the early Christian. I saw for the first time Roman glass ring, and oil lamp depicting a glass workshop, amber funerary objects and medioeval buckles. I really spent there some quality time.
