You need a guide to get the best out of the palace. The history is fascinating. In season, I expect you need to get there early to avoid the crowds

Great place to walk around and get *lost*. Many shops and cafes along the way. Cobble stoned walkways. Many locals stroll here too

I had not fully appreciated that the entire centre of the city was actually the ruins of the palace. Tiny, tiny streets, even by mediterranean and adriatic city standards. One, we had difficulty getting a suitcase down! It was all a bit tacky and overcrowded for our liking. We love a place with vibe and bustle, but this seemed verging on the MadMax-apoclypse-end of an era -manic- tacky vibe (if you know what I mean....?).

We enjoyed lively entertainment, fireeaters and dancers etc., one night in the Peristyle - the open air courtyard in the heard of the ruined palace.

Word of warning - there may be lots of nice restaurants, but we found that the majority of good ones were booked in advance and we had gone slightly off tourist peak season!

Make sure you have a guide with you or at least a good guide book and take the walk all around the palace which encompasses old Split.

We hired a private guide for the day and his stories about this place and how it would have looked in its hey day really made it come to life. Unearthed from the rubbish!!
