Owner description: The ruins of the Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace date back to the late 3rd to early 4th century A.D.

This is so much more enjoyable than what you see when visiting ancient sites in places like Rome and Athens. In this case, the palace is not only historically significant, it also still serves as a place where people live, work, shop and dine. Instead of roped off areas, you are able to walk the same paths, enter the same rooms and touch the same walls that people did centuries ago. Well worth a visit. The highlight of any trip to Split in my opinion.

This was amazing - you can explore the roman palace, but it has evolved into homes and shops over the years. There are lots of fascinating things to see as you explore eg Temple of Jupiter, Cathedral of St Domnius. The Basement Halls are fascinating (cost 35kn) well worth the fee - this really gives you a feel for the history of the palace

We spent a few days wandering through the Diocletian palace and it is not to be missed! If you like old ruins pay the extra money to explore the basement rooms as the architecture still standing from the Roman times is amazing. Also, on a muggy day the Split City musuem inside the palace was an amusing place to wander for a little while.

Amazing number of little alleys fitted in to the confines of the Roman Palace. Many very good places to eat, shop and have ice cream!!

This is the showplace of Split and at ten acres in size it is hard to picture what it was like when it was completed. So much has been changed that even the mirror image of what is reconstructed below does not fully allow comprehension of scale. It is a must for any visit to Split and a guide is essential or a very good guidebook at least.
