“Great food and service”
Reviewed March 3, 2011

Having eaten here for the 2nd time in as many weeks, I must just say that the choice, quality and price is wonderful. The amount of food you get is enough to fill my husband and leave him very satisfied so thats a great plus. It's only a 5-10 min wander from the old town and parking is so easy. Well worth a visit but we were told it's best to book at the weekend.

“the hidden jewel”
Reviewed February 24, 2011

i`ve been living in Split my whole life, but just recently i`ve discovered (with a little help from my forein friends) the chinese restaurant on top of Lavčevića building. good location, easy to park, gorgeous view (from the terase you can see the sea and nearby islands), nice decoration, polite staff and great food! i`ve tried chicken fried in sesame and a rice with wegetables (first time i didn`t want to experiment that much) to finish with fried ice cream (my favorite part!) and it was all under 100 kunas with drinks and everything!!! i honestly recommend this place, i`ll be wisiting it again, that`s for sure!

“Split's only Chinese restaurant is a pearl (especially if you like fried ice cream!)”
Reviewed January 12, 2011

There's only one authentic Chinese restaurant in Split and it's called the Orient Pearl. Since it's out of the main tourist area, it took us a while to discover it. We've been back twice, most recently to taste their signature dish--Peking Duck, which needs to be ordered 24 hours in advance.

Now that we know how to get there, the location is actually VERY easy to find. It''s on the top floor of Split's only round building, located at the corner of Domovinskovo Rata and Bihacka, which is a crossroads just before the Manus bus stop. As the crow flies, 10 minutes walk north of the Green Market
.
OK, so the place is in an office building on the top floor. But what a surprise when you get off the elevator and enter! Light and airy, decorated in typical Chinese restaurant fashion with giant urns and lots of red--but since the building is round and they have the top floor, the view is stupendous and there's even an outside patio where you can sit, eat and see all the way to the sea. We were there at night the last time and the lights on Brac Island were clearly visible!

OK, the food. The menu has more than 100 dishes..from vegetarian to Pekind Duck.
Appetizers (soups and interesting salads) range from $3-6. Main courses range from $10-15 with the house special skampi (large shrimp) the highest price on the menu at a reasonable $23..

We had the sweet and sour pork ($12) and chicken curry ($10) and they were both fresh and delicious. The English speaking waiter (the owner and all the cooks are Chinese) really impressed me because I wanted Mao Po Tofu and he said, "I'm sorry, we don't buy it, we make it fresh but in the winter, there's no call for it, so we only have it in the summer". Wow. The meal was huge, so we didn't finish it because my wife had never had fried ice cream and it was on the menu.

You really need to have VERY good ice cream which also has to be VERY frozen so it won't get all mushy when it's dipped in the batter and quickly deep fried. It was sublime and we staggered home filled to the brim.

Our second visit was to try Peking Duck with friends from Russia who recently moved here. Authentic Peking Duck in China uses specially bred ducks which are grown specifically for cooking in a unique way. The Orient Pearl only uses fresh ducks, which are prepared to order. Suffice to say, the "way" they are prepared for cooking is unique and allows normally very fatty duck to be enjoyed sliced with special sauce, pancakes and very thin slices of vegetables.

The duck comes on a platter, sliced with only the legs and wings intact. You take pieces of already sliced duck and veggies and put them in the thin pancake, add the sauce, roll it up and voila! Peking Duck meets Mexican Burrito!

The duck was yummy, with just enough crisp on the skin and moistness in the meet to really enjoy the flavor. At 390km for the four of us ($18) complete with home made sweet and sour duck infused soup, egg rolls, Peking Duck, rice and deep fried fruit for dessert (not as good as the ice cream, so I ordered it separately and simply put it on top!) and of course tons of rice, the meal was a bargain.

So if you are in the mood for Chinese, this is the place...and for a beer or drinks on a patio overlooking the city and the sea, what a great place to go at night after the sun is down! Just look for the 5 story round building with the word "LAVCEVIC" on top and their sign in Croatian: Biser Orijenta (Orient Pearl). If you have a car, park in the lot across the street for $1 per hour.
