Although the hostel itself was nice and clean, getting there was a bit long winded. No detailed directions to it are given, as it says for you to go to the National Theatre and give them a call to come and pick you up. We couldn't get through on either of the numbers provided and so were only left with the option of paying for a taxi. Upon arrival, the owner wasn't around so we had to wait about 15-20mins for him to be contacted and sort everything out. We wouldn't have minded so much if we were paying less for the room. When we did occasionally see Lero he was friendly, and gave us lots of infor on the local area. The hostel is a really short walk to the Riva area of Split and the old town, which was a bonus as it wasn't too far to pop back to.

Location: This hostel was not central in Split. There are loads of hostels right near to the bus station and central city, but we were disappointed that ours was a long, uphill walk away. It wasn't really even near enough for us to just pop back to the hostel to get ready after a day at the beach. The walk was through some small back streets too which was not particularly safe for two girls. Apparently there are two locations, it was not clear which was the reception and we were not in that one! We were in this little apartment type one below the owner's mother....

Service: On arrival, there was no one there and even when we knocked on the door no answer! So we went up a level and knocked on that apartment (since there was no one anywhere to be seen!) I showed our reservation to a lady who answered and she disappeared for about ten minutes after indicating for us to wait. She spoke no english but we somehow realised that she was related to the owner. After about 20 minutes he arrived. He was pretty cool to be fair, about the only advantage of this hostel. He gave us lots of advice about where to go and offered to pick us up on his motorbike (apparently he normally has a car, but had lost the keys!!) We didn't accept. We only stayed one night and didn't see him again.

Hostel: Double room seemed nice from what we saw (made friends with the couple staying in there....) but the twin room we had was awful! So hot. Noisy outside. Shabby old furniture. Terrible. The kitchen was dark and dingy and everything needed replacing. The bathroom was clean and nice.

Room Tip: Double room looked ok, twin room don't go there.

Hostel Lero is operated by a group of entrepreneurial young men, headed by Lero. I managed to find the place at Vijugasta 16 (they are in an historic area and can't use much signage, you just count along the house numbers and walk into the front yard of what seems like 16, it worked for me - I recommend printing their written instructions AND the map). The place was unattended, so I let myself in and filled up my water bottle. I encountered a fellow traveller who was staying in one of the other buildings, together we found Lero and after that we were on track, Lero instructed one of his guys to carry my backpack and escort me to our apartment (address Marijanski 15). We were on the third floor and had the whole place to ourselves (the property manager lives on site), there were seven of us girls, and we felt very safe, and loved having the place to ourselves. The bathroom facilities were basic (and mind the washing machine doesn't electrocute you), but there was a lot of space, free wi-fi, and the guys were really friendly, helpful, and nothing was a problem. It was an easy short walk into the main part of town.

We stayed in the apartment usually used as Lero's reception (privately renting the whole place). It was a lovely apartment, spacious, had everything we needed and very homely. The location was great, a quiet residential area but a short walk (5-10 mins) and you were in the old town and centre. The host, Lero, was fab. Very friendly, helpful and generous with ice-creams!! I would highly recommend this accommodation, it's great value.

Apparently there are few different locations of Hostel Lero, the one we stayed at just had three private rooms, a single, a double and a twin. It's really just a house, there's no reception or anything, and the host, Lero, who's very friendly and a cool guy, only seems to pop in a couple of times a day.

The common living area of the house has cool furniture and a TV with heaps of English channels (although there are better things to do than watch TV in Split obviously) and the kitchen and bathroom are simple but have everything you need. It's clean, the neighbourhood is quiet, there's an iron and a hairdresser, and the shower pressure is good although I ran out of hot water once. No breakfast is included.

It would be good if the rooms had rubbish bins, and reading lamps, but hey it's a hostel.

The house was a very short distance by foot to the Riva and the palace, and in the other direction about a 20-minute walk to some nice beaches which Lero will probably tell you about, and a 10-minute walk to a great cafe at a lookout point on the hill.

The only problem was how difficult it is to find when you first get there. If you come from the waterfront, you have to navigate through a maze of tiny streets and it's hard to find a map that has all the street names, and on top of that the hostel has no signage whatsoever. Maybe there's a rule against it or something. Lero asked us to call/text him so he could pick us up from the city, but we didn't have a sim card. If you have a phone, this option is HIGHLY recommended.

Provided the other people staying in the house are your type of people, you'll enjoy it. It's small so if there's noise you'll hear it, and if everyone's quiet you'll have a quiet time. If you were travelling in a group of four or five friends it would be ideal - you basically have your own house.
