“Simple but Very Good Food”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

This place is always packed with locals it seems and, as it is 100 m from the Frederik Koklen hotel, we tried and were pleasantly surprised. The squid was delicately done and they have nice cappuccinos. The menu is not huge and prices are very reasonable. It is a patio style restaurant on an almost quiet street.

“Nice atmosphere, confused service, food mediocre”
Reviewed June 8, 2012

This looks like a charming place and may be good for a coffee. However, although I arrived in the afternoon when it was nearly empty, the staff seemed baffled about how to serve. I was not given napkins until I asked. Then I had to ask for a fork. The wrong dish was brought to me, and when the correct one was brought, I had to wait again for new silverware. No attention was paid until I waved someone down. The fresh veggies in the Greek salad was ruined by flavorless dried herbs and the tuna fillet was way over-cooked, almost burned on the outside and flavorless and dry and grey on the inside. Brussels Sprouts were covered in a gloppy sauce, which didnt matter because they were raw I side and burned outside - nearly inedible. Such a pity, the location and decor is nice.

“Charming and cosy place”
Reviewed January 7, 2012

Officially, Gogol-Mogol is as an art-cafe. There is not much art inside, though. The interior of Gogol-Mogol is rather a cozy heap of quirk and old-fashioned things scattered around small rooms in the basement of an old building. It feels a bit cramped, but fine once you squeeze to the free table and turn to the menu, which comes in two languages and features more than 10 sections with different types of starters, meat, fish, pasta, etc. Funny pictures and phrases illustrate each section, but their English translations are a bit ridiculous.

The selection of food and drinks is quite good. The overall European/Mediterranean cuisine clearly dominates, with a few local specialties, such as Vorschmack (traditional Jewish dish, chopped herring with potatoes) and draniki (potato pancakes). Everything we tried was delicious, although we have not got any memorable impressions from the food. The service was also OK, and the bill surprised us a lot, because it came in a small woolen mitten: great and funny idea!

Altogether, this cafe is good for all occasions: either breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or simply coffee and chat. They also have free and pretty good Wi-Fi. Prices are same as everywhere in the city center, and hover around 8-10 Euro for mains.
