“Discomfort disguised as Quaint”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2013

This remodeled old home in the heart of Antigua is lovely to look at with its central courtyard and flowering landscaping. The staff is friendly and helpful, however, the rooms are small and dark and the beds feel like plywood. Rooms are on two levels and like most hotels in Antigua, there is no elevator. When coming home after 10 pm, there is no lighting in the interior, making it easy to trip over the multiple steps up as you meander through the courtyards to your room. Bathrooms are small and towels are limited. In fairness, my friends love this hotel, however, I likely will seek a more comfortable bed the next time I visit.

We were really looking forward to spending 5 nights here but unfortunately this hotel despite all of its charm, fell short of our expectations in many ways. Enough so that we checked out early and weren't even asked at the front desk why the early checkout or apology. Really disappointing that the front desk is not properly trained nor has any initiative or interest in it's guest's experience and satisfaction. Not a way to properly run a successful boutique hotel.

Positives:
The hotel has a great location (across from the delicious & golden-fork awarded La Fonda de Calle Real restaurant)
The hotel is small, charming, beautiful details such as: large stone windows, candles, small, cozy sitting areas, fountains, etc. Colonial architecture with lovely details.

Negatives about Standard Room:
Standard Rooms are really small (literally just fits a queen sized bed--probably total 10'x10'), the website room descriptions are vague (the english to spanish doesn't translate the same) the shower water pressure is really bad (only hot water with a trickle of cold water), leaky sink faucet, noisy toilet, room door is a petite french door (cute but really awkward to use), the sheets and towels were heavily fragranced in floral softener (so strong that it was hard to sleep) The product is so abrasive we asked to wash our sheets in just water to try and get the smell out.

Best Part: All of the staff was nice and generally warm. However, there was one male employee who stood out, Neri, who seemed to be doing it all and making up for the inadequate other staff members who weren't trained in more than hello and how to make breakfast or take a reservation. We saw him doing everything from helping us with our laundry, plumming, removing burnt toast from the toaster, turning on the fountains, serving tea and busing the breakfast tables.
Nery seemed a very hardworking and exceptional staff member. What about the other staff's training or management.

We were impressed with the receptionist Deima's multiple email and phone correspondence prior to booking and her professional confirmation template of our reservation via email. However, once we arrived she never once introduced herself or asked us how our stay was going. We even tried looking for her. Poor followup. There were never any apparent management doing anything worthwhile on site or interacting or even making eye contact with guests. Any time we said more than hello in spanish to the receptionists they immediately rang the silver desk bell for further help from Neri. Very strange and not a way to run a business in my opinion. Throughly training and hiring employees that do more than smile is needed. Hiring people who show initiative and are focused on the customer's experience is essential to success.

All in all, I think this hotel lacks polish, finesse and proper training for its staff. One person can't run a boutique hotel on their own. Also, the bathroom issues need to be fixed in order for guest's to have a relaxing and enjoying experience. The very petite size of the standard room should be properly communicated prior to booking.

With so many accommodations available in Antigua, it is advisable to find another option.
We really enjoyed Santa Rosa Boutique Hotel for our last night.

This a a very cute little hotel. Everybody is extra nice and always ready to help you. The place is very clean, but if you have a dark room it might smell like a humid room. The location is just great! Everything is close, but not to close. The only thing I would recommend is to ask for a room on the second floor in the back of the hotel. Why? Because you can hear everything that is happening in the court yards and at least in the back there are not so many rooms. Nice place but I would not recommend it for a busy season since it might get to noisy with to many guests.

Room Tip: Second for in the back of the hotel (205 was nice)

We stopped at this wonderful hotel at the end of our stay in Antigua. It was perfect! Although we spent only two nights, I felt like I could have stayed for a week. There are so many intimate spaces to read, relax or meditate in the hotel. The courtyards are beautiful and the gentle sound of the water adds to the ambience. After a long day of walking the facinating cobbled stone streets of Antigua, it was alwasy a treat to return and relax on the comfortable couches and enjoy the courtyard. On our walks through the city, we passed many hotels and peaked into the courtyards. Meson de Maria was definately my favourite and when I return to Antigua, I will definately be staying there again. Hopefully next time, it will be for longer.

This is a wonderful place to stay in Antigua, Guatemala. The open courtyards are spectacular and the rooftop offers impressive views. Fresh flowers every day. Unique furnishings add to the atmosphere. I wish I could stay in a place like this everywhere I go.

This little hotel was one of the highlights of our trip.

Spent a week in this lovely hotel. The rooms are immaculately clean, breakfasts were well done. Carlos attended to our needs in a professional manner. The views of the surrounding volcanoes and city were spectacular when viewed from the rooftop terrace.
We loved the old world charm provided by this hotel. This hotel is close to the markets, shops, and fantastic restaurants of Antigua. As an American, it was nice to not worry about having an adapter for our electrical needs.

Great location between the Arch and the central plaza in Antigua. Clean rooms, plenty of bottled water supplied daily, queen beds extremely firm but (to me) still comfortable. Kind and helpful staff, lovely setting with an idyllic courtyard and porches providing space to lounge, and a great rooftop terrace with excellent views of the surrounding hills and volcanoes. Room had a nice flat-screen TV, good bedside reading lamps, and a safe inside the wardrobe. The power outlets accommodate American electrical plugs, so no need for a converter. Concierge can supply a blow-dryer if you need one. Be sure to bring your own travel alarm clock, though, or to use your cell phone to set a wake-up alarm.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 210, which is at the end of the veranda above the central courtyard, with a sofa a...
