“Superb Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2010

I am a little late with posting this review, but I just came across a small gift the proprietors gave us when we left and it reminded me to write a review. Hotel Entre Volcanes is a really cute hotel right in Antigua. My group of three was in and out over 10 days as we were mountain biking around Guatemala. We spent about 5 nights there in total. They were super helpful in holding our luggage while we went out on multiple day rides. The proprietors husband even lent us some tools to disassemble our bikes when we ran into some problems. I will say that sound travels pretty easily in the small hotel, but it really wasn't that big of an issue. The breakfast was great, the internet worked, and the staff was friendly: I left super happy with the hotel.

I am well traveled in Central America and know what to expect when staying at a boutique hotel such as this in the region. Entre Volcanes was far below the standard I would expect at any well-reviewed location in or around Guatemala. The outward appearance is of a nice, quiet home/hotel conversion with a center courtyard - typical for the area. The room itself, however, left everything to be desired. Bathrooms are beyond small and both the toilet and sink are black porcelain. Why black, you ask? To hide any remaining fecal matter from the previous guest. The rooms lack both a fan and window screens leaving you with a hot, still room with an odor of Guatemalans past. The sheets were likely purchased down the calle at the local mercado and have not been washed since. Both my travel companion and I found bits and pieces in our beds - pubic hairs, food, sand - things you wouldn't find if the sheets had even been through a wash.

There are many, many other hotels in Antigua that are priced similarly and offer a cleaner and more hospitable place to wash the sun and heat off you at the end of a day of traveling. Try Posada de Don Rodrigo - that's where I went after leaving here in the middle of the night.

We stayed at Hotel Entre Volcanes for three nights. They were very helpful in all respects. The day we had to leave a friend in the States emailed us requesting a special type of coffee. We had trouble finding it. A member of the staff knew where to find it and made sure we had it in our hands before we had to leave for the airport. The Hotel is very clean and safe. There is someone at the desk 24/7. Plus breakfast is included.

The Posada has changed names and ended their affiliation with Camino Seguro (Safe Passage) They are now called Entre Volcanes. New website below.

I have stayed there 3 times, most recently Thanksgiving holiday and will be returning with a medical mission team to recover at the end of January 2010. Could not recommend it more highly.

My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights in September 2009. We loved everything about Posada Lazos Fuertes. Following the advice of other reviewers, we requested a room away from the street and preferably on an upper floor. Our room was incredibly clean and very quiet. We loved the friendly service at breakfast, the recommendations by local staff, the convenient location, and the fabulous roof deck. Free internet access was a plus.

Many others have written about the special cause of this hotel, operating as a nonprofit to support Safe Passage. We loved this terrific mission, and were delighted to support it while still having such a high level of quality at such a reasonable price.

The only negative comment that I would make is not about this terrific hotel, but the travel agency that is used to shuttle hotel guests to and from the Guatemala City airport, Silva Travel. Our flight was delayed by two hours, and we called the hotel to let them know. They in turn phoned Silva Travel. When we arrived, the driver requested extra payment for waiting those two hours at the airport since his agency had not informed him of the time change. We had already tipped him generously, but he asked for an extra $20 in payment. Not a huge deal, but a little irritating since this was the agency's fault.

On our return flight, our early morning flight was moved back by an hour. About a week before arriving, I notified the hotel about this and asked for a time change in the reservation. I confirmed this upon arrival. On the morning of our flight, our shuttle dfid not show up on time. When the hotel staff person contacted the agency, they had never updated the time change. They called the driver, but he arrived forty minutes late. We nearly missed check-in for our international flight!

So please use caution--I think that the shuttle would have been fine had there been no airline changes in our flight schedule.

Everything else about our stay was absolutely perfect. I cannot wait until my next visit to Antigua and to the Posada Lazos Fuertes.

I recently spent a week volunteering with Safe Passage, the organization that works with the kids whose parents scavenge in the Guatemal City dump. The hotel met all of our needs, clean rooms, hot showers, breakfast, internet and bottled water available all day. Yes, it is noisy, but most centrally located hotels will be - that is life in Guatemala! I really liked the extra security, the main door is always locked, but there is someone there 24 hrs to let you in.
