Many guide books discouraged walking up here but there were several police stationed at the sight. We were told 6 are now assigned here to provide a safe environment. Took a cab, tuk tuk, up for 40 Q w/o much bargaining and enjoyed the walk down. Don't be scared off by concerns over safety. During the day there were many others on both the stairs and road to the top. Views are well worth it.

Go there (walking up the hill from 1st avenue is safe during the day, and there are police officers stationed near the steps up) the last day of your stay in Antigua, as you will be able to recognize the different ruins and other landmarks by then.

Made a change from churches and ruins. Easy walk up, much shorter than expected. It was a mostly clear day, I expect views are not so impressive when it's cloudy. 2 tourist police were sat halfway en route and 1 was at the top - felt completely safe but as others have said best to go 9-5 when police are likely to be in attendance.

It is not a difficult climb up the stairway (even for a 68 year-old). There were five police officers along the way so security was never a concern. The view out over the city was great. If the stairs are a problem, you can always take the long way around by road, either on foot or tuktuk.

Although the walk was lengthy, uneven stairs, etc., the view of Volcan Agua and the City of Antigua was worth it!
