We got an early start on the volcano (9 am or so). A member of our group sprained his ankle (unknown to the rest of us) early on and it slowed us down sufficiently. (We thought he was just out of shape.) Our guide was completely unprepared for this sort of issue, and we were little more prepared than him. We ended up just one turn short of the summit at 6 pm as it was starting to get dark. However, our injured member was no longer able to continue. So, we started climbing down...in the dark. Between the 4 of us and our guide, we had 2 small flashlights and a reading light (fortunately LED-equipped so it was sufficient). Our guide's cell phone had no charge, and because of the cold, the rest of our cell phones were quickly running out of charge.

Two of us took off ahead of the other two and the guide to try to get a horse sent up to carry our friend down, but when we got to where the horses are normally stabled, there was no one there guarding it for the night (as we were told there should be). By some miracle, we had enough charge in one of the cell phones to call someone down in Santa Maria de Jesus. FINALLY, they were willing to get a small "rescue party" together to come get us, but they wanted the two of us to go back up with the rest of the group. That just was not possible as we were exhausted and the other flashlight was out of power. (We had the reading light, the others had the flashlight. None of the lights were brought by the guide.) Fortunately, the moon was bright that night and we just saved the light for the shadows. We met up with them nearly at the base, and one of the party accompanied us back to the truck...and gladly took the money which they had told us they were going to charge us for the rescue party and horse.

We all got down alive, but don't trust your guide to be prepared for emergencies!
