“Splendor and luxury in beautiful Antigua”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

We decided to splurge a little bit (although I still thought our splurge was relatively cheap!) by staying in the Grand Suite Room at the Meson Panza Verde. The room was huge with the best part being the volcano view – can’t beat waking up to that! Our favorite part of the hotel was the rooftop terrace, it was beautiful and a great place to enjoy a magnificent view (volcano, nature, rooftops) and a cocktail. Although we didn’t eat in their restaurant, we did enjoy their breakfast – particularly the tamales, which were delicious! Antigua is so small that you can’t help but be close to everything - the location of Meson Panza Verde was nice as it was a few blocks away from the parque central, so a little quieter than other locations might be. Overall, we loved our stay at Meson Panza Verde and would definitely recommend the hotel when staying in Antigua!

We visited Antigua and had 3 nights in Meson Panza Verde. It is really as to be in paradise when coming from winterly Europe. The gardens and patios are enchanted and the gardens on the roofs - you have to find them - are really beautiful. We had room Nr. 4, this was a cosy living room with and an open fire place, a small private patio with a little fountain and a two bedded bedroom. Everything was very quiet though the restaurant ist really near by. That is why they close at 10 p.m. They don't want their guests to be disturbed. The bathroom ist extraordinary designed and there is everything you need.
The meals were really good. Not so the breakfast. That was a bit poor, but you could ask, and then eveything has been brought to you.
We enjoyed our stay in that hotel and were sad, we had to leave avfter 3 nights.

Room Tip: Room ' 4 is as large as a suite and is really recommendable.

I had been visiting Antigua for the past decade and have had the good fortune to stay at Panza Verde the past six years. I've stayed in different rooms: each special and unique. Antigua provides many hotels with high-quality services and spaces, but I consider Panza Verde to provide the most personal and exceptional service. I was surprised to read a complaint since the hotel staff has helped me with unusual travel plans for years. I have gotten ill a few times and the staff has gone above and beyond. While it's true that the excellent restaurant means it's not pin-drop quiet, I always consider the lively energy and atmosphere a plus and have never experienced a noise problem. The upstairs terrace is a romantic spot to have a drink, and the rooftop has marvelous views if the surrounding volcanos. The hotel's location at the south edge of town, away from the tourist hub, makes for a quiet and calm atmosphere.

I stayed at Panza Verde with a friend who knows Antigua well and has stayed there previously - this is her favorite hotel and now I understand why. The staff is friendly, caring and incredibly helpful. My friend and I both came down with colds and were taken care of better than we would have been at home!

I liked the location because it was a bit off of the main tourist drag. It's still an easy walk to any place you'd want to go, but not in the middle of the tuk tuk and vendor chaos. Best of all, the rooms and restaurant are centered on a magical courtyard garden and there is a lovely veranda that overlooks the garden and the nearby volcanoes - calming and enchanting.

Our room was cozy and unique. I believe we were in #4 - two double beds and a sitting room with a fireplace, which we happily used every evening (with a little help from the staff). There is a lovely little private patio where you can enjoy your morning coffee. Beds were comfortable and we slept very well, despite our colds and the fact that this room is directly off the restaurant (no issues with noise at all).

Speaking of the restaurant...yum! We treated ourselves to a meal in the restaurant one evening and it was incredible. From the cocktail we started with through to the main courses (we were too full for dessert!), everything was delicious, service outstanding and overall a relaxing, well paced dining experience. I also loved the buffet breakfast and enjoyed getting to know Blanca a little bit, whose smiling face greeted us every morning!

There are many nice hotels in Antigua, but Panza Verde is a unique property that employs some very special people. In the end, this is what makes this stay most memorable for me!

Room Tip: Room #4 has a fireplace - just ask the staff to help you get it started!

Torrential rain greeted us as we arrived in Guatemala and so due to the flooding on the roads the usual 50 minute journey to Antigua took over two hours. We were warmly greeted by the staff at Panza Verde ushered into the small empty bar and provided with a cold meal and delicious coffee as it was now well past 11pm and the restaurant was closed.
Our room number 11 was past the pool and up a small flight of stairs. It was lovely. It was a large room, the log fire had been lit and vases of roses welcomed us.The bathroom was enormous with a huge dark blue mosaic bath.My only complaint with the room was that the room lacked a mirror when drying my hair.
Breakfast was continental and served by a sweet lady who carried the jug of orange juice on her head.We ate lunch and dinner in the restaurant and the food was superb, the lamb chops were to die for.We enjoyed the live music in the candlelit restaurant in the evening and the warm and ambiance throughout the hotel. The roof terrace and garden were an added bonus and the position of the hotel being just a short walk from the central square. The staff were excellent and very helpful.Without doubt Panza Verde was our favourite hotel in Guatemala.

Without doubt Meson Panza Verde offers unique rooms in a beautiful setting. However, we couldn't help feeling that Panza Verde is more of a restaurant than a hotel. We were very disappointed with the "hotel" reception staff who couldn't answer even basic questions about the excursions they were offering (e.g., time of departure, places visited). We also asked for help with our onward travel plans on several occasions, but no-one got back to us with the information we needed. Consequently we booked our excursions and onward travel plans elsewhere.
Having looked at the hotel's website, we were fully prepared for loud music on the Friday and Saturday nights, which they have in their restaurant. What we hadn't anticipated was that the tables for the restaurant are mainly in the hotel courtyards directly facing or below the "hotel" rooms. This means that if you want to relax and enjoy your "hotel" room in the afternoon or evening, you have to put up with a tremendous amount of noise from the restaurant, particularly if they have large parties, even on the nights when they don't have live music. Consequently, if you want a quiet and relaxing hotel, and want to have an early night as you are tired and jet-lagged, I recommend you book elsewhere.

Thank you for staying with us at Meson Panza Verde and providing your personal feedback. We are always attentive to our guests’ comments and strive to uphold our high standards of hospitality on every occasion. It is unfortunate your experience with us was not entirely to your satisfaction. Regarding your first concern, we must remind you our hotel staff had sent you an email with extensive information respecting your likely onward travel plans. Furthermore, in the rare situation when one of our staff members is unable to provide certain details, we kindly ask you to refer to our hotel manager. As for the music volume, the large majority of our guests find it quite reasonable and we are often complimented on the soothing piano sounds emanating from our restaurant. Ultimately, we feel it is a matter of personal temperament which dictates a guest’s enjoyment of our intimate setting. We do hope to receive your preference again in the future, and look forward to validate our commitment to elegance and excellence.

We stayed in Room 12 at La Meson Panza on 14 and 15 February 2014. Due to our latish arrival we didn't think we would be able to eat in the restaurant which had been recommended as one of the best restaurants in Antigua. However despite being told in advance by our travel rep we had to be seated by 9.30 pm in order to eat when we arrived at 10pm we were asked if we wished to eat so we did have a meal which was a set menu for Valentines day but was absolutely delicious. The decor of the restaurant, the ambience, the staff and Room 12 were all superb. The room was more like an apartment and was super spacious and comfortable and my only regret was we were not able to stay there longer than the two nights. The pool is small and not somewhere i would swim given the location but that's not a complaint. Highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Only saw Room 12 but i would definitely ask for this - a double shower , a double heart shaped bath...
